Mute trait
#1
Incurable muteness as a trait that any character can have, in addition to being a thing that mimes have and a mutation.
It could have you spawn with a clipboard pre-loaded with a ton of paper so you can write things down and communicate that way.
That's it. That's the suggestion.

Edit: I'm still gonna play a mute character in spite of the dev's stance against adding it as a trait and (perceived?) distaste of it (idk they really seem to not like the idea of mute characters). Tunnels Scurry lives on

Considering deleting all this because I got way too into it and was acting like an actual idiot (can threads even be deleted here?)

This idea has been brought up several times, with negative responses from the devs/admins, so I wouldn‘t expect anything like this coming anytime soon. However, if you want to communicate via writing alone, you can always just… do that? There‘s no need for this to be a trait.

That's what I've been doing with my newly created canonically mute character, it's just a matter of certain things that make you speak involuntarily (like when you get massively drunk and start saying random nonsense without typing anything), and things like screaming (which you can't do with the mute mutation).

Go to genetics with a bit of paper with just "Hello if you find the gene "Frontal Gyrus Suspension" Can you radio me when you get it? I'd love an injector of it"

Interdepartmental interaction goes up, and you are happy. Easy solve

I do think being mute like a mime DOES however, block any screams and such.

So I guess a trait that will block screams and loud gasping like the mime wouldn't be too unwelcome.
If someone wants a super hard mode where they can't scream while being cut into pieces or being operated on wouldn't be too bad?

I'd say insted of mute just go with "Larengintis Permanent" You can still talk but you just can't shout or scream. I don't know.... I think them wanting a trait to block screaming and such isn't a bad thing?

Otherwise this suggestion I don't like even with my idea. I just want to add this so we cover all bases.

Making it a trait means we're enabling/passively encouraging people to opt out of communication in a game whose purpose is social interaction.

If you'd like to go the extra mile on your own to play a character as mute and still put in the effort to communicate with people around you, that's totally fine and dandy.

All I ask is that players who do this continue to put in the effort to actually participate in being social in a social game.

You shouldn't feel bad about posting ideas even if it gets moved to bad ideas. Everyone has ideas that don't go anywhere, it's only an issue if they are spam.
