Glasses to Goggles
#1
Building on an idea that AmaranthineApocalypse sparked in me in this thread:

Given that you can make all sorts of glasses now with the new materials system, would it make sense for a range of upgrades that could be applied to glasses to give them the functionality of a set of goggles (ProDoc, Spectroscopic, Mesonic, Thermal, and potentially the new HydroHelper and GeneTek Goggles listed below)?

This way you could turn your plasmastone glasses into something functional as well as stylish. You could have a basic tree where applying upgrades in certain orders has certain other effects:
  • ProDoc Variants
    • Glasses -> Health Analyser Upgrade = ProDoc Goggles (functionality as current)
    • Glasses -> Health Analyser Upgrade -> Health Analyser Upgrade = Upgraded ProDoc Goggles (functionality as current)
    • Glasses -> Health Analyser Upgrade -> Genetic Analyser Upgrade = DocTek Goggles (functionality as per ProDoc Goggles, plus shows the target's genetic stability on examine)
    • Glasses -> Health Analyser Upgrade -> Reagent Analyser Upgrade = DocSpectro Goggles (functionality as per ProDoc Goggles, plus shows reagents in living mobs on examine)
  • Spectroscopic Variants
    • Glasses -> Reagent Analyser Upgrade = Spectroscopic Goggles (functionality as current)
    • Glasses -> Reagent Analyser Upgrade -> Health Analyser Upgrade = SpectroDoc Goggles (functionality as per Spectroscopic Goggles, plus shows reagents in living mobs on examine)
    • Glasses -> Reagent Analyser Upgrade -> Thermal Analyser Upgrade = SpectroThermo Goggles (functionality as per Spectroscopic Goggles, plus shows temperature of mix)
  • Mesonic Variants
    • Glasses -> Mesonic Analyser Upgrade = Mesonic Goggles (functionality as current)
    • Glasses -> Mesonic Analyser Upgrade -> Thermal Analyser Upgrade = MesoThermo Goggles (functionality as X-Ray Vision, but with added flash vulnerability as per Thermal Goggles)
    • Glasses -> Mesonic Analyser Upgrade -> Reagent Analyser Upgrade = MesoSpectro Goggles (functionality as per Mesonic Goggles, plus act as Atmospheric Analyser on examining visible tiles)
  • Thermal Variants
    • Glasses -> Thermal Analyser Upgrade -> Genetic Analyser Upgrade = ThermoTek Goggles (functionality as per Thermal Goggles, plus can see someone's fingerprint on examine)
    • Glasses -> Thermal Analyser Upgrade -> Reagent Analyser Upgrade = ThermoSpectro Goggles (functionality as per Thermal Goggles, plus act as Atmospheric Analyser on examine)
  • HydroHelper Variants (new, see original thread)
    • Glasses -> Botanic Analyser Upgrade = HydroHelper Goggles (show general plant health, similar to ProDoc Goggles)
    • Glasses -> Botanic Analyser Upgrade -> Reagent Analyser Upgrade = HydroSpectro Goggles (functionality as per HydroHelper Goggles, plus shows reagents within a tray on examine and reagents that would be extracted from produce on examine)
    • Glasses -> Botanic Analyser Upgrade -> Genetic Analyser Upgrade = HydroTek Goggles (functionality as per HydroHelper Goggles, plus gives genetic information of living plant (i.e. not produce) a la Plant Analyser on examine)
  • GeneTek Variants (new)
    • Glasses -> Genetic Analyser Upgrade = GeneTek Goggles (act as forensic scanner on examine, giving target's DNA and fingerprint)
    • Glasses -> Genetic Analyser Upgrade -> Health Analyser Upgrade = GeneDoc Goggles (as per GeneTek Goggles, plus shows target's genetic stability on examine)
    • Glasses -> Genetic Analyser Upgrade -> Genetic Analyser Upgrade = Upgraded GeneTek Goggles (as per GeneTek Goggles, plus show active mutations in living mob on examine)
In terms of what this means for the existing system:
  • Remove the ability to manufacture ProDoc Goggles in the Medical Fabricator (I think that's the only fabricator that makes goggles), for the sake of consistency.
  • Add a handful of the assorted upgrades to the relevant departments.
  • Make sure the mechanic can scan the upgrades to make more if needed, or add them to the relevant supply crates/locked crates, or add them to one of the vending machines (or a combination of the above).
  • Note that prescription glasses would not count as glasses for the purpose of upgrading. If attempted, add some nonsense about the lenses being too specific to mess with without ruining them. If attempted with the harm intent, it replaces the prescription glasses with regular glasses and then applies the upgrade.
Some suggested additions that aren't the main focus but would be "nice-to-haves":
  • Allow standard cybereyes to have an upgrade applied to them (prior to insertion, of course) to upgrade the eye as relevant. In fact, remove the other cybereyes from the Robotics Fabricator, instead replacing them with the relevant upgrades. This means cargo can produce the goggles that people order, and roboticists can churn out augmented eyes with no problem.
  • Allow cybereyes to have their upgrade removed by using a screwdriver on it. Note that this would also apply to the ecto-whatever eyes, which could let you then stick that upgrade into glasses (probably shouldn't be scannable by a mechanic, but no real harm in it if the material cost to fabricate is high/exotic). Potentially make the glasses require two upgrades to be fully functional, with just a 100% chance of being affected by "ghostly wind" or voices if you have just one. Whatever.
  • Add HydroHelper and GeneTek cybereyes.
  • As a note, cybereyes can only hold one upgrade each. You get the effects of both eyes, but cannot upgrade them further. They do not stack with goggles, but provide distinct effects, so you could have a ProDoc eye, a Spectroscopic eye, and a pair of Upgraded GeneTek Goggles.
  • Expand on this further to analysers as well: allow a generic "Analyser Frame" to be constructed in General Fabricators (I don't think they'll benefit from unusual materials), which can have any of the standard upgrades applied to turn them into a specific analyser (Health Analyser -> Health Analyser, Reagent Analyser -> Reagent Scanner, Mesonic Analyser -> Atmospheric Scanner, Thermal Analyser -> ?, Botanic Analyser -> Plant Analyser, Genetic Analyser -> Forensic Scanner).

I absolutely love this idea and think it'd be absolutely great.

Also harm intenting prescription glasses to strongarm a module in while you're wearing them should cause the glasses to shatter and blind you.

YES. Yes to all of this 100%.

A box of random scanners would also be nice to buy from QM/QM traders like Pianzi's box-o-scanners he sells.
