Will the solarium GOOD ending ever be cleared?
My guess for why #sol has given up is that we don't really have a good place to test stuff anymore without worrying about ruining everything.

It is kinda frustrating trying to figure out the secrets of the universe only to get cutoff by the shuttle being called cause one assistant is throwing pipe bombs everywhere

I'm sorry you don't get a completely empty extended server so you can not play the game while discovering secrets.

Plenty of time and space for figuring stuff out folks. Maybe you should ask for help from the pros.  :heysexy:

Also: The oldest of the old solarium nerds figured out how to successfully do this on a crowded server, and they had much less people. Study the past to understand the future.

Playing the game normally and sitting alone on an empty server hitting an item with every other item to see what happens are not the same thing. This seems obvious to me.

Hey, I'm just trying to relay the general vibe the channel's giving off.

While I personally realize just how incredibly selfish it is to ask someone to pay the hosting costs for a server just so a couple of nerds can have a science playground, I don't think everyone else does. They've either just never considered the cost of a server or they just don't care.

Either way, the lack of an abandoned server to test things on is definitely lessening the level of solarium activity.

The other main reason is that it seems like a lot of the regulars have gone mysteriously missing.
Maybe they dug too deep?

On the flipside, it's not like there isn't anything else that people would want to discover. Let's face it: The derbies field alone has 5+ "things" which are not strait forward to figure out. There is an actual 'warning, do not study! causes crashes' on many TermOS related stuff. And how many people really know how the engine works (beyond "there's Watts coming out and stuff is on fire, job done")?

During many rounds when I try to figure something out, the likelyhood of finding out that specific thing are quite small and lack of progress in the face of antagonists is very frustrating. But I still learn something new almost every round, even when I'm not trying something new.

Learning to hellburn is a great challenge and a great way to explore new things in the game, I spent a week learning to do it and once I figured it out it felt great.

it's certainly not as if the old extended servers didn't have The Antag Problem (read: an antagonist bumbling in at like 300+ minutes and murdering everyone and destroying the chance of a shuttle call so everyone lamented for hours in deadchat/adminhelp as this guy actively sucked fun out of the world)

edit: i really do sort of miss them for their potential to test things with slightly less horror & reproach, but hosting does cost $$$

i think part of why people are hesitant is that certain mysteries have no answer to whether they have an answer at all (read: bradbury tapes and whether all 5 actually exist and are accessible); there's a difference between "solving a puzzle" and "covert wasting of time"

If that's from what I said then I need to clarify. Studying the computer systems is a-ok. Accidentally locking up the server is also fine. It just means you need to send a bug report (under exploits) and not do it again. Sharing said exploits is bad, though, which is why I can't go too deep into explanations until they're patched up.

Well, reading the code tells you how it's supposed to work. A hellburn is different. According to Noah it's a feedback loop going on during heat exchange. Makes sense to me.

-----------

The lack of progress is a combination of many things. To the broad majority the whole #sol thing comes off as an incestuous bunch of nerds running a 'serious business' cloak-and-dagger type game. It's not like that, but the loudest of that group have given it a bad name. Telsci and research just has a bad name from all the nerds holding the shuttle hostage because they had 4 keys at 80 minutes.

Telesci is really not a Horrible Doom Incest Vortex, sometimes people are jerks, yes, but the #sol crowd is quite productive and they've learned a lot. Hang in the IRC or something sometime, I dunno, read the history.

And also don't bomb telescience DON'T BOMB ANYONE THANKS
