More things that encourage people to actually work together overall are fun.
The arc smelter works being public access because people can be cool dudes and share their research. Either by showing everyone their meth armor or space lube tiling the hallway around security.
For instance telecrystal armor is rarely a good idea becauase that's how you end up in space by accident.
Also last I checked chlorine trifluoride gloves do not let you punch people ablaze.
I think once the popularity died down less people were interested in it anyway.
As for a arc smelter suggestion (if not already a thing) maybe steel wheat could be used as a component. It would give botanist something to look forward to when they grow steel wheat.
They could build steel fabric uniforms and run around sort of bullet proof.
