Primal Genetics Trait

Admittedly, I'd like to make genetics more mobile. We openly know that port-a-gene makes it a lot more fun to do genetics, but we still have genetics having to escort people to genetics and casually make them wait for for 5 minutes in a box while they do their thing.

They also have quite a bit to do even without monkifying people, their job has very good depth.

Gonna go with an absolutely not on having monkey fur being tied to hair colour. I do not want rainbow monkeys.

gimme a HELL YEAH

monkeys are fair game to murder if they are being a nuisance as said on the wiki

or failing that, make it a challenge trait like pugs

Monkeys can still hop tables and easily worsen most player-facing roles. Greytiding monkeys are awful and them being 'fair game to murder' doesn't mean they'll just sit still while you bash their head in. I'm against monkeys being regular occurrences overall.

Except it is. the line on griefing between players is not a hard line, and since you don't do anything explicitly griefy by hopping a table, players will just pick monkey so they dont have to ask for anything from any department.

For example, breaking in a wall/door/window to get at something is pretty griefy, but hopping a table to steal stuff is arguably not griefy. Either way though, you end up stealing items that the walls are there for in the first place. The griefy behaviour is in essence, defended by the fact that you didn't have break station equipment to get in. At least right now, getting monkey solely to steal things requires taking an uncommon joke role or getting someone else from genetics to cooperate.

We keep forgetting even if we remove table hopping. There is still mailchuting wich is mostly restricted to mailman outfits. But monkeys get it for free!!

Also I will repeat this... We removed alot of fun functions or usefull ones or changed them cause it was used commonly to grief. It's not the fact the grievers get banned over and over and over again. It's the fact it sours the tastes of the shift since every round someone is going to use the "thing" to grief or the possiblity exists.
it's why ghostdrones lost their RCD for example cause alot started grieving in classic and thus it was removed...
We can all say: "once the grievers are banned" but it has already soured the mood... and as history has shown.. devs and admins rather remove a possible common grieving methode all together then keep it in the game and hope it doesnt happen again.

The problem to me is similiarly this... "Let's add a clown trait to the tab/spacebux" since we got many RPers/players who play a clown in other sections like science and such. And in my opinion... I already dislike this, luckily most "clown species" RPers focus on doing their tasks 1st.. but it doesn't mean it takes away from hearing squeeking shoes everywhere and making something unique LIKE THE CLOWN kinda pointless since everyone can spawn as a clown...

While I am fine with spacebux monkeys / hardmode monkeys (Aka no table hopping and such). I still feel like it will take away from one simple feature...
Being a monkey is suppose to be "BAD"
Same as starting with no limbs or no arms or no legs. It's suppose to be a bad thing...

I don't mind monkeys on shift if they are "rare" but when I see more then 3 monkeys as employees, it makes them less unique.

If we do get Monkey genetics being a thing and remove table hopping. They will be the only mutant race that needs vocal translators from the start. Wich I am fine with mostly.... but again... I still see being a monkey being a "bad thing" in universe, due to the fact we serve monkey meat, beat up monkeys freely and test on monkeys in genetics.... Now see monkey genetics testing on monkeys and having to question their morality...

I feel that I was too harsh with my words and should clarify a bit on this. If monkeys were to get customization said in the initial post. I'd say that it should be something like how pugs do it. Like so:

As someone who regularly plays a monkey character I don't think trait is really needed. From my experience genetics 99% of the time are more than happy to turn people into monkeys and kinda expect it (it gives them a lil interaction from outside the genetics pit too). Something that worries me is monkey cliques on RP starting that exclude other players from interacting with them due to the need of wearing a translator for non-monkey players to understand them. There's other reasons already brought up in the thread which I won't repeat as to why it's probably best to not have it as a trait.
It's a cute idea on paper though :)

It was removed as a trait because players used it to grief/Gain early advantages.

Sending themselves to Bridge/Captain's quarters, Flipping over HoP's desk and stealing his ID round start.
Building tables in the halls to block off crew while being able to flip over it, themselves. Flipping into the bar to use chems in spite of being told they can't come in.
Shipping themselves into Sec, Grabbing a box of grenades and throwing the box at security while hiding under the tables, rendering themselves nearly unclickable.

They can't do all of this anymore but overall I think no one really misses it that doesn't get themselves turned into a monkey at will already.

So litterly the reasons most of us (and me)  is the reason it got removed long ago. Heck I didn't even know they had the critter abillity of hiding under tables.
Wow... interresting. So if we want it bad, we need a new monkey system altogether.

Maybe new genetics called "Flippy" (jumping over tables) and "Compressable Skeleton" (Fitting into any mail chute) would fix it.
And no longer make them part of monkeying but insted they add a new trait to monkeys wich is using their tails?

MEH just thinking out loud. Eitherway...interresting development.
Also I seen the table grief before on RP.

could honestly just have monkeys be able to climb tables via clickdrag rather than the flip over tables system we got now, the table flipping is also a bit of a pain to deal with as a monkey

at odds with it being a trait though, goonstation would heavily require changes on areas such as the hop with the use of double thindoors

my god, not thindoors

the bartender would also have a ton of hassle added on as well
overall it just seems like a pain to have implemented, not that worth it

The only thing I really liked in this thread was different monkey hair color. I need that in my life.

We can still have that. Some mutations change acordance to hair color/skin color/eye color. You dont become the DEFAULT!! So.. that can be added :P
