One absorbs the item,...

And if there is none - quickly use the fire-resistance-membrane to expand beyond.

I know you can do this with large items that block spreading (although frankly it's unreliable as hell even with attack upgrades) but I don't recall ever doing it to small items.  I'll have to try the next time I roll blob, but even if it does work I don't think it's remotely sufficient in dealing with how utterly bullshit lit candles/cigarettes are.
