Just to recap: When you drag another player onto yourself, it opens a menu that displays their gear in a hyperlinked list. Items carried in the clothing-pockets are obscured and displayed only as 'something'. Clicking an item there means "try and grab this item of another person". This displays a time-bar over the person being looted, and displays a message conveying the action. Once the bar is full, the item will be in the grabber's hand. For a firsthand experience, stand close to one of the monkeys on the station. You should eventually get a "Darwin rifles through NateTheSquid's pockets.".

So presumably, the Original idea was that when trying to take items out of the pocket slots, it should succeed instantly, and without any alerts.

How about the proposed "Pickpocket" trait lets you see what's in the pockets rather than "Something"?

By way of observation? Or by click-drag?
The former may lead to many traitors being outed.

What if you could literally steal their pockets

The latter. Examine text doesn't tell you if people have anything in their pockets at all.

That's useful, but I still think being able to take things from pockets without a staus bar giving away what's happening could be a thing, since you'd still have to stand next to someone for an extended amount of time

Not instantly, as it could still include the time-bar. This is how it works on /tg/. You walk up to someone, click drag on them, choose to remove what's in their pockets. There's no indication, but there's still a time bar. It's just not a well implemented feature on /tg/, because when you do it, the items fall to the ground still, rather than in your hands, giving you away.
