Even if it's useless you know someones going to want it (although the prize could be funnier.) Maybe one prize for getting the engine started in a reasonable time, a better prize for starting it quickly, and a third prize for pro burns (extra RCD and compressed matter cartridges?)

Honestly I think just changing the start-up guide so it's easier to follow and gives a slightly nicer output would go part of the way toward fixing this, I usually have to show and tell people how to set the engine up. When I was figuring it out myself I found the guide a little hard to follow (mostly because the pipes confused me until I got used to them) and only learned set-ups that would give a nice, steady output by word of mouth.

If we actually want the engine set up, we have to give the engineers a reason to do it. (I feel like I've already read that in this thread, but I don't wanna scroll up)

I don't have any really good ideas on this, but maybe you could give them a pet singularity. Of course instead of the monster station-powering ones, this one would be 1x1 and the only thing it would be able to eat are lose junk on the floor. It should be pettable and paramortal. You can knock it out with attacks and such, but it will always wake up in a few seconds and run away from whoever hit it.

Of course if the engine were to... stop working... the minilarity would collapse upon itself due to the station not producing enough power to keep it stable, or something.

Anyway that's my idea: Pet singularity while the engine is up.

If the engine were somehow involved in drug making I think the gang members would keep the power running.

Also if switches are ever added gang members could sell them for money, so that's a good reason to keep the engine going.
