Scanner-mancy? Something similar to this happened with sleepers, and of course it parallels the infamous jugglemancy incident.
If I'm reading this right, the way for the trapped victim to get out is for them to right the scanner that they're trapped in and select to enter it, which then puts them properly inside the scanner and allows them to exit it. The scanner does need to empty to do that, of course.
