Jack Hunter HOS application
#4
  • Thank you for your feedback, i do want to respond where i can to hopefully clear some things up.I have on at least one occasion talked to what seemed like a new security assistant and offered them training, spending a lot of round time doing so only to find out it was Jack random naming.I apologize for wasting your time. I do not really do this anymore.I have been shot lethally by Jack because I patted their shoulder and they shot me out of a "fear reflex of being hunted by the Syndicate"I can't actually remember this... if i did do it I'm sorry. it was probably a while ago? and on a few occasions I have witnessed Jack threatening to sue others for shooting him. This is more of a funny character thing if anything, i do not typically intend to follow through.
  • Take more time to roleplay with the rest of the crew, invest in their stories as much as your own. Jack seems like he has a lot of backstory behind him, but I never get to really see that much, and there are a lot of people on station who would love to learn it too - they can also potentially enhance his backstory and vice versa!

It is true that at times i would focus on sec or command, lately i've been trying to change that with things like sitting at the bar till we get a call, walking around and talking to people, i also do things like offer weapon maintenance training to the other security (though a majority of the timethe other sec doesn't wanna watch), maybe i should try that to the crew too.
  • Sometimes you lead from the front, but sometimes you need to lead from behind too - If you see an officer that looks overwhelmed, take time to help center them too. Maybe medical is shaken up from an attack, let others handle the next emergency if its possible so you can stick around medbay and reiterate that security is there for them.

I admit i tend to only step up when it's expected or necessary at the current, i think i did it most often as captain, at least after the initial applications.(and when i was in those times trying to lead whenever i could a HOS player told me i was trying to hard!) when i see someone not knowing what to do in a situation i usually offer advise, or if i see someone not know what to give someone for punishment i tell them to "give them x time in the brig" or "give them a ticket" or whatever punishment that person needs and if a sec team definitely needs it i just do my best to lead them all in the right direction. Though since I'd lead when expected if i was playing HOS I'd be leading the whole round.
  • Let others have a place in the round too. Encourage a diverse source of feedback from all command about punishments or issues - the RD may not be in charge of security but you can certainly ask their opinions on things when it involves their employees or expertise too.

This is something i try to do when i can, getting the head of staff involved in their own employee or asking their opinion but it can be rather difficult when they are hard to get ahold of or disappeared, i don't have a direct non general line to them if I'm not captain, though if i am captain i usually ask them over the radio or ask them to come down if i happen to be more closely working with security, which i try to avoid unless i can see the team is struggling, as i fear getting called seccap. I feel if i was constantly trying to get ahold of a head of staff sec would be finished with the perp by the time they got there., but i do wanna try this more actively.
  • I would suggest you try to learn more roles on the station. I am unsure if you know how to set up the engine, or cook food, or test artifacts. While the Head of Security is usually not doing those things, I think it helps to have a broad scope of how to help others in the round - as HoS you're a whitelist individual and you have an innate trust factor.

I've played this game for 5 years at the time of writing, i know every role on a base level at minimum i just focused on security and command roles due to how          different they tend to be in gameplay loop compared to a lot of the other ones. also i know those were rhetorical but to answer them, i know how to set every engine besides hotspots and nuclear at a base level, cooking food is pretty easy, and i used to play a decent amount of artlab scientist.
  • Sometimes its okay to not do things by the books. I don't mean beating people to death for minor transgressions, but HoS is a very blurry role and sometimes you can't be technically correct in a very strict way. Not everyone will like your decisions, but learning to make decisions that benefit the round as a whole and give people the most forgiveness and leeway only helps everyone.

i know this, and i expect to not have a "this is how this should be handled" for every case cause as i stated in the application proper, security is one of the most fun roles for me because your always dealing with something new. there was a bit where when i played captain i didn't interfere with security at all, then as my initial applications went up i tried to get a feel for leading in a role with actual authority to make sure no one was going like "why are you bossing me around" though i wasn't specifically leading security i was leading the whole station, security was often the one who needed it given their head of staff role is usually the one left unfilled. for a few months i tried out a real serious captain, and while it was fun im returning to a bit of a middle ground of being serious and being lenient.
