So it's been brought to my attention that fabricators probably use overlays. This makes things A LOT simpler.

If someone in the know could confirm this or better yet explain to me which parts are/aren't overlayed I'd appreciate it.

yep, they certainly do. I felt bad when I saw you had made them up with all the animations and stuff like you had Shobon... (deflated)
these are the overlay and misc sprites for manufacturers:

oh, and a note for .dmis, the icon states support animation in them, referred to as "movies" in the DM sprite editor. you can select to either make a new one or edit an existing icon state as one.
