I really like this idea.
Also kind of makes me think you can do something with the leeches and the biodome. Parts of that map are kind of swampy and have the right vibe for it.

Include "The Vapors", "Unbalanced Humors", and "The Red Death" that have minor annoying symptoms and can only be healed by leeches.
Adding salt to the leeches should kill them and destroy the reagents inside. Ripping them off by hand should randomly select: Bleeding, brute damage, exploding the leech, or actually removing it.
