they just melt into puddles of water when placed inside a freezer and out in space

The snow [REDACTED]. It's [REDACTED] with [REDACTED], forming a [REDACTED] which simulates snow. This explains why it can be just a layer of snow on the floor just fine, but once organic material comes into contact with it and forms a roughly spherical shape, it starts to undergo [REDACTED] decay.
