Let the buttons 1 through 4 cycle through your hotkey setups as a blob, like toolbars in strategy games. The ones where with one toolbar setup, keys 1 - 9 do one thing, but you can change to another toolbar to change the functionality of all 9 keys.
EG, press 1 to have: alt - spread, shift - attack, ctrl - absorb. Press 2 to select alt - thick membrane, shift - fire membrane, ctrl - mitochondria, etc
These wouldn't be preset, you would still pick your hotkeys for each number, it would just let you change hotkeys on the fly. With the exception of some very good players, most blobs do not win their round. While this would make the good players even better, it would make life a lot easier for newer blob players. More importantly, it would make blob more fun to play, so even if it has to be balanced afterwards with longer cooldowns or the like, I'd still prefer to have this added.
