I've found that in my numerous high engine attempts, the hot loop simply freezes. It seems to occur when it gets too hot, or the pressure too high.
The gas (judging by the gas meters) will stay constant for long periods - at first, these periods start out short, 10-20 seconds, then escalate up to several minutes. At the end of each period, all of the meters will suddenly jump up in regards to their pressure & the temperature, as though it had not been frozen at all, and the engine will turn on for a second. The period that it seems to stall for can escalate to ridiculous amounts, which, as far as I can tell, seem to be indefinite in length.
