The fixes on
https://hackmd.io/@goonstation/docs/ don't work. It's miraculously only mentioned once in the document even though it's not a ridiculously niche error.
I managed to compile the code successfully some months ago so I've got an old dmb file but I've forgotten how to do that since, and I'm just now trying to get an up-to-date version of the code.
Not sure if this is the subforum for this but I saw a similar post here when trying to search for a fix.

you need to have a dm file open.

Open in what? Just visual studio code? Either way, it still won't work. F5 still encounters the same error.
Not sure if this information will also help troubleshooting or not. This is the 2nd error I get when I click on "debug anyway" and my launch.json which I suspect is set up wrong but I have no idea how to fix it.

Never did find a fix. But downloading goonstation directly as ZIP from the github and compiling it in dream maker does the trick and is a way less brickable way of just getting a test server up and running, than the thing in that "SUPER 100% MANDATORY DON'T SKIP ANY OF THIS EVEN THOUGH IT'S COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO THE AVERAGE PERSON" hackmd guide with github syncing and visual studio code.
I really hope you dev guys or whoever have control over that github write a guide for people who actually just want to host the vanilla code at some point. Repurposing the contributors guide for people who simply to run vanilla code is a massive headache for the average player.
