Reason for application:
Security has been my main role on Goon for a while now, I’m not even really sure how long. In this time, I feel I’ve come to understand the impact that even a small handful of officers have on the flow and enjoyment of each round, and I wish to be one of those considered trustworthy enough for the Head of Security role. I also think the feedback received from this application will be the best way for me to improve my RP and gameplay.
Security experience (300 word minimum):
Security was one of the first roles I really remember trying; perhaps not THE first but something about it left its impression on me. I remember being trained by Dr. Puggers when I first joined, it took almost the entire shift, and I barely left main sec by the time the shuttle arrived. Naturally I played a second round, wanting to put all I’d learned into practice. From here, the rounds as security just kept counting. When I’d first started I was very much interested in the combat and action like I imagine a lot of newbees are but I think I’ve mellowed out a lot since then.
Moving up from assistant to officer, I went through all the highs and lows that every officer does. I’ve found myself fighting off syndicate death squads, alien abominations, petty thieves, annoying clowns and worst of all the Thursday lawyers. Despite this I still find myself in situations that I was honestly never prepared for or expected: Lemon’s over-taking the station, a dog hidden under the floorboards of medbay eating people’s limbs. Trying to keep people safe from these novel threats is one of my favourite things about security.
Through all of this I’ve also made mistakes: misidentifying the wrong person as a suspect, dying in silly and preventable ways, losing my baton or taser to an especially wily staff assistant. I think improvising off these kinds of mistakes are the thing that drive forward good and memorable RP for everyone involved and I’m always happy to learn from them.
More recently, I’ve been making efforts to take leadership of security. Attempting to direct others, provide advice and track events ongoing during the round, assisting the HoS where possible. I had one round in particular, recently, where I felt officers were coming to me and actively asking for my opinion on things in regard to sentencing, priority targets, current emergencies, etc. That round was the one that really made me think about being a Head of Security.
Overall though, I love the friendly atmosphere within security and the cross-department opportunities for RP. I like how the HoS and regular officers work hard to make sure that new assistants are welcomed into the fold and know what’s going on. I hope to continue to be one of the people that fosters the environment which drew me into my favourite job on station.

Answer two or more of the following:
- What advice would you give to other sec players?
Main Sec is often the place of many large fights and located a good distance away from the medbay on most station. There are times when you or a suspect is on deaths door after these fights and you won’t have enough time to get yourself or them to medical. Fortunately, there are basic first aid supplies and a defib located in each security department. Learn where these are and you can use them to stabilise yourself or the suspect out of crit long enough to travel to medbay or for a real doctor to arrive, allowing everyone involved to continue with the round and their RP.
- What was one of your favorite security moments? (Either playing as a sec officer or interacting with one)
From a recent round, the barrier wall at main sec hanger against the tide of skeletons from the Bone King’s warehouse, It was fun seeing all those officers stand side by side yelling things at each other like “Hold the line!” and “Don’t let them through!” These moments of teamwork, where we're all working towards the same goal while bantering back and forth drive a lot of my enjoyment from playing security.
- What game improvements or changes do you think would benefit security players
I like the idea of having a sort of “security medic” role. We will get one occasionally through a doctor requesting to have a custom job from the HoP but having a second sort of niche role (that could roll antag) within security, like detective would be nice and add more variety to security gameplay. This does come with the drawback though of decreased reliance on Doctors which I think would be harmful to RP opportunities.
- Describe any differences in your playstyle when part of a full security team and when being the only security officer.
Usually, more officers means more antagonists. As a full security team I try to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that records are properly kept so that we are able to process antagonists quickly and effectively to keep everyone’s round flowing smoothly, while also springing into action when required. As an only officer I will try and keep the crew reassured about any emergencies while handling them as effectively as I can; with any help I can get from the Captain, AI, or other departments when appropriate.
Answer one or more of the following fun questions (because it's important for the HoS to be fun):
- Write a poem to convey your thoughts on security/NanoTrasen/space/bees/anything related to SS13.
A mighty machine
Infinite intelligence
“AI, open door”
- What's a security gimmick that you've ran or wanted to run?
I like to set up voluntary contraband checks at the minor security checkpoints around stations! Simply put up a sign asking to see people’s ID and contraband and let them interact with it however they want! I’ve had people hand in minor contraband like drugs and knives entirely voluntarily with a little RP to go alongside it. I’m hoping one day an antag will decide to self-report for the bit just so I can look at their bag full of bombs, say “Yeah that is contraband!” and give it all back to them, after all I’m only checking the contraband I never said anything about taking it.
