Goon servers you play: 4, sometimes 3, and extremely rarely 1

Reason for application + game experience (300 word minimum): I am applying for Mentor, because I want to put myself forward to be able to give back to a community that I have thoroughly enjoyed playing in since August of 2022 and for nearly 1,000 total hours of playtime. I avoided trying Space Station for a long time due to the perception that it was both very difficult and very unwelcoming of new players. Landing at Goonstation was by pure chance (a series of google searches for a server) and I am extremely happy to say that this is the first place I joined and the place at which I remained, because it shattered the negative perceptions I had of the game. Although I have had some bad experiences (as bad experiences happen everywhere), the overwhelming majority of my time here has been spent having an immense amount of fun, laughing loudly, and trying to create my own gimmicks and uphold the fun of those created by others to be able to enjoy this game collectively.

In my time spent here I have predominantly played in or learned the functions of the following roles: Medical Doctor/Roboticist, Engineer/Miner, Security Officer, AI, and Captain (as well as other Heads of Staff roles).

Medical Doctor/Roboticist:
I am familiar (without needing to reference the wiki) with the functions/uses of most medications, including how to properly deploy cardiac stimulants (defib., epi., or ephedrine) to treat arrest/failure, how to properly use saline-glucose to treat hypotension/shock, when to inject charcoal as opposed to antihistamines or pot. iodide, how to treat brain damage with mannitol, and how to treat eye/hearing damage with oculine.

I am also experienced using the (new) surgery system. This experience includes navigating the menu with minimal wiki references for organ locations, how to accurately target the correct “side” for limb or eye replacement, how to properly use a hemostat, how to properly deploy medications (e.g., slab.) or stimulants (e.g., epi.) when replacing organs with cybernetic counterparts, and how and when to use the dialysis machine.

I understand how to use the cryotubes (and how to set them up). I understand how to use the cloning equipment and how to use SR, including checking for puritan with medtrak. I have a basic understanding of the pharmacy and how to use the standard chem equipment to make chemicals, although I need the wiki open for recipes to be successful.

I am familiar with how to build, upgrade (add plating to increase armor, printing and placing modifications into the docking stations), and repair cyborgs. I understand the difference between cyborg and AI intelligence systems, and how to check and pair a cyborg with the lawrack. I am also familiar with the AI law system and use of the robotics terminal (as a Head of Staff).

Engineer/Miner:
I am familiar with starting and maintaining all engine types (including using enginemaster). I am best with the nuclear engine, however I maintain and improve it manually. I can start and maintain a hellburn, however I do not know how to perform a pipeburn. I am familiar with the procedures for improving the power generation on singularities (feeders and cold plasma), but I do not know how to construct feeder systems.

I know how SMES work and how to set them up; I know how to troubleshoot APCs, replace their batteries, and link a remote generator; I know how to hack and repair the wires on a door and on machines/fabs; and I know how to build, repair, and demolish all basic constructions with minimal references to the wiki, including understanding how to use a deconstruction device and deploy deconstructed objects. I also know how to build and repair terminals.

I know how to upgrade and construct new mining equipment, operate the long-range teleporter to lock in new asteroids, use and repair the magnet, modify pricing and lock items on the rockbox, carefully deploy charges to safely collect Erebite, and how to prepare for (and hopefully not get killed by) nanite asteroids. I have experience mining underwater, but on a very limited basis.

I have no experience or knowledge of mechcomp. I have a basic understanding of packets to the extent that I can use them for airlocks and lockers.

Security Officer:
I do not claim expertise in this role, but I am familiar with its ins-and-outs and of the stresses involved in playing it properly (or, attempting to). I understand how to collect and properly deploy my basic equipment (the various taser types, robust donuts, morphine, paint rounds, et cetera), how to properly label and place my pinpointer and disk, and how to both pay attention to chat and communicate properly with my team. I wrote up a fuller description of this role and its involvements in my past denied HoS application, which I would reference for my opinions and knowledge about it that I still hold.

To elaborate briefly, I know how to use secmate (including updating status, adding records, and searching via DNA), I understand how to properly escalate with criminals, including opting to generally give them leeway to allow their gimmicks to play out, how to properly search a criminal and to do it in the safety of security, what times and punishments to issue for crimes, and how to counter certain threats (within roleplay reason).

AI:
I am familiar with the hotkeys to manage doors (open/close, bolt/unbolt, electrify), management of wires and hacking to regain control of a door, APC management and overloading, SMES use, understanding the AI’s view and why areas are fog-of-war, how to viewport, how to manage securitrons, basic uses of DWAINE as a SU, use of the robotics terminal, and how to check if another silicon is connected to the same lawrack as me.

I understand the station CoC, how to process orders, and how to read and apply laws and new laws, including understanding the difference between terms like ‘precedence’ and ‘overrides’. I also understand how the AI can affect the flow of a round, taking note not to be overbearing against antagonists to allow the Security Team to handle them (unless I am ordered to intervene or I witness a human being killed).

I understand how to operate with a cyborg body, use the tools available from my module, how to switch modules, how to apply upgrades via a docking station, and most importantly of all… how to play dress up. Very important.

Captain/Head of Staff:
This is the role I have played the most in my time on Goonstation. Why? Because I enjoy how it enables me to generally take the game slowly and be helpful in all capacities across the station. It allows me to take a noninterference approach while being equipped to assist whomever might need it. Is Security outnumbered? Armour up, gun charged, and into the fray. Is Engineering empty and the station is about to go dark? I startup the engine and use RoleControl to request Engineers. Also, I ask the HoP to advertise to promote someone to the role. Is a staff assistant looking to create a fun gimmick that’s harmless? Stamp of approval on a hastily written paper. So on and so forth.

With that being said, I am specifically experienced with using the auth disk, making relevant announcements, checking up on the Heads of Staff to support them and keep ahead of problems, use the communications console, use the bank computer, take over customs in the absence of a HoP, and taking care of Jones… mostly by allowing them to run around and be a nuisance on the bridge.

Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will): I have been accidentally banned numerous times (banned by an admin on accident while they were banning someone else). I have received a couple warnings, but no actual bans.

Hi! I actually don't think we've ever interacted much, but I took some time recently (which helpfully coincided with watching a few other applicants) in light of your application. I've got some feedback and hopefully bumping your application up might encourage others to take a look and give you some too.

So I've been watching a few rounds for other applicants but you've also been about the same time and I've also managed to catch a few rounds where I was watching a little more closely. Due to something I'll cover later this feedback covers that more than anywhere else, I'll split it into more general things in one half and cover specific stuff in the other before summarising.

General stuff:

* I got to see you play a variety of roles, a couple of captains, one as a MD, but mostly command roles. In these you interacted really well with departments and seem to have a really good generalised knowledgebase. There wasn't a thing you seem hugely fazed by.
* You were in any example really good about both engaging in a situation happening or someone talking to you no matter who they were. I didn't see you shoo anyone off for anything. An example of this was one round where a somewhat classic trope of a scientist offering a large amount of drugs came up to you. It's easy to sometimes brush this off but you engaged with it which I'm sure they appreciated!
* You were good at communicating across radio channels too. It's not perhaps a huge mentor thing but it shows you're aware of the importance of talking to players in the game, and you conveyed information well and in a concise manner. You also seem pretty laid back in terms of mentality.

Specific round stuff:

* During a round yesterday you came upon a situation where someone was diagnosising an issue in medbay. You didn't "take over" from the doctor but instead told them about sabutamol as the appropriate item to treat it, you weren't rude, just imparted the information politely. Seems like a pretty great example of what mentors are aiming to do help out players and let them do things on their own terms.
* I liked your captain gimmick in a round just now where you built a little outer post and just engaged players as they came across you. It honestly seems like you're happy to talk to anyone who wants to talk to you, and that's always a great mindset mentor wise where you'll end up helping lots of different players.

In terms of critique, it's more feedback as I honestly didn't see anything I can give much critique for, more just general advice: As you don't make a lot of use of discord for questions and you were in roles that didn't generally afford much opportunity to directly offer assistance while setting up it took a while to get enough notes to give you some feedback. It's not required at all to be doing either, but I'd either say if you're looking for more player feedback try and jump on opportunities to get it if only hopefully to get you more feedback. However, from what I saw you honestly seem to have a great approach to playing, and a good knowledgebase I can only see as a positive thing for being a mentor, so a definite +1 from me.
