Hey all,
Been making a lot of internal changes to the... umm... the... fabricator? manufacturer? code over the past several months, and I've personally been plagued by some ambiguous naming. If you don't know already, the Fabricators you see in-game that make stuff are referred to as manufacturers internally. This leads to the two being used interchangeably, making it a bit more difficult to search and overall just annoying -- it's not something I want to be thinking about as much as I already have.
Basically, I'm proposing that one name or the other gets chosen. I'm going to present the frequency of use in the code, along with their official definitions:
Alright, images aside, I will reveal that I personally would prefer for all the references to be to 'fabricator' for a few reasons:
- Popular use between community
- Easier to abbreviate "Hey, did you check the fab?" vs. "Hey, did you check the manuf/man?"
- Makes more sense "to make from raw materials by hand or by machinery" vs. "to construct from diverse and usually standardized parts", the latter makes more sense to me. I suppose the former might moreso, but that's part of why I'm making the post.
- Personal preference (I just like the word Fabricator more. sounds better, feels better.)
Anyways, up to you all. Thoughts? Different name entirely?
