The captain, what are they to you?
#1
As sparked during a certain debate about Captains and a PR asscioated to it.

I'd like to ask to everyone.. What is the captain to you? Since I didn't mention it in the topic what they mean to me...I will start.

The captain is ment to be the top command, the most responsible but also... the one that could "Technically" do any job.
While in lore it's just some guy with AA.
To me gameplay wise... a good captain support the crew by leading, doing and helping jobs that are lacking.
The captain is the problem solver. You turn to the captain to solve a problem that is the hardest to solve. (Wich is why they are locked behind rounds played)

I see the other heads as specialists of their craft in case you wondered.

But the captain is the guy you go to dispute any problems non of the other heads can fix.

to be 100% honest, i see them in practice as the serious version of the clown. they are the guy who goes places, does things, and has things happen to them. and then the crew & the AI gossip about it on 145.9 because it's about the captain, so everyone has to know about it. highly visible, highly distinct, highly talked about, loves all of the attention.

I think that the captain’s most important role is to fill in for any department that lacks crew. They have access to nearly everything on the station which allows them to briefly take up any job when needed.

Over important useless fool. I use to see them as somewhat important to protect or keep an eye on when the syndies use to need to get the disk from him but now at least on classic I see the captain as just a staff assistant with all access.

Depends. On rp at least captains can be facilitators. THey can be judges. They can be last lines of defense, they can be mediators.

They can also be a clown.

In general when I am not captain, I treat them with as much respect as they treat their position. If they try to be serious, involved, and considerate, then I treat them considerately, involve them, and give them gravity.

If they declare the clown is co captain upload a law that all cyborgs have to fart steals money does meth aqnd dies after giving a syndicate agent their egun to mech scan yeah. I'm not gonna do more then the bare minimum.

However, since again, I primarily play RP I will usually defer to the captains decision on most matters, as long as its in good faith. If its in bad faith and tyranical I'll step down.

Pretty much what Trollbreeder said. I also think they can be a pretty good figure of authority when you need decisions made on things, but that's from my perspective of playing on RP.

Perfectly describes my view. Jack-of-all-trades role for when there's need of extra help.

The general consensus so far is the biggest backup of all. As someone who once tried to run 3 departments at once as a chief engineer in lowpop, that can be something fantastic to have!

But what is the captain when everywhere is full, and people have things covered for the most part? The engine doesn't seem like it'll burst into flames right now, medbay is properly staffed and have all the chems they'd need to cure an army, and the people are fed and drunk?

That's where the comparisons to the clown and staff assistant come in. A real character that tries to do a bit to spice things up when everyone is doing things properly and incredibly bored because of it. The captain can decide to fund a full-scale invasion on mars, give cargo the extra hands they need for bonus requisitions, or just the guy who drinks at the bar and gets blackout drunk. That level of freedom defines the captain, and also why some view the captain as a staffy with AA and guns.

The captain can take many forms, but the best captains feed into a round and bad captains take away from a round. The captain, to me, is a head chef putting the finishing touches on a soup. They can either add in just the right spices, put in nothing themselves, or dump in a mountain of mayonaise becuase it's what they like.

At worst, a drunken raving lootbox

At best, an admirable, somewhat respectable lootbox

A individual so loud and influential, a figure head that singlehandedly gives command a identity, even though he's the only person that's solely in it.

Also in regards to the PR, what's people's thoughts on poplocking antag captains?
