YOUR OPINION PLEASE! about discord channels

Hi! I'm getting pretty goddamn tired of the hourly 'what exactly is, cool zone' arguments, so instead of trying to make any sense of them whatsoever, I figured a different tack was in order before I blow a blood vessel in my brain.


So: The purpose of this thread is to get an idea of what sort of channels people want and, more to the point, what they should be for.  I am not promising that whatever dream channel you come up with will be added, this really is just an interest check.

So what sort of input am I looking for? Here's a great example that I just made up:

I think it would be cool to have a channel about fitness.  We could help each other come up with exercise routines we can do in our homes with stuff we already got, and encourage each other!  Bodyshaming or mocking people for not having the time or assets to put more work into fitness will not be allowed.

See? Very simple.  Puts forth the channel's identity, gives a very rough sketch of the expected use, and even calls out a 'and here's some shit that could happen in there that shouldn't be allowed'. Perfect. I want to kiss it.

There's only one rule, and a few 'no way, no how' categories.

- this thread is for discussing what channels YOU like and YOU think are cool. you are more than welcome to quote someone else's idea and say you like it, or suggest minor changes, but if you think someone's idea sucks, keep it to yourself. If you think the idea would be better with more than minor changes, write it out your damn self (but feel free to quote the one you're riffing off of.) Mainly, every time I see a NO THAT SUCKS post in here, I am going to enter into a fugue state where I cannot be held responsible for my actions, which is likely to continue until in my fury I find the 'delete this shitty-ass post' button.

- pornography, or anything focussed on topics relating to sexual activity, including pictures or video thereof.  NO WE WON'T MAKE A CHANNEL YOU CAN FUCK.
- anything that would (either by its purpose, or we're pretty sure would inevitably result in because of its purpose) break Discord's TOS.  NO YOU CAN'T HAVE A CHANNEL TO TRADE YOUR STOLEN CREDIT CARD NUMBERS OR WHATEVER.
- anything that would (either by its purpose, or yadda yadda) focus on Asshole Behavior like doxxing people (whether or not they deserve it), invading other spaces to cause chaos, etc etc.  NO WE WON'T MAKE A CHANNEL FOR YOU TO BE AN ASSHOLE IN.

I'd like a channel about computer shit explicitly, because I tend to fill entire pages with rambling and it detracts from whatever conversation is actually trying to happen around me. There's a couple other people who like to talk about computer shit too or ask for advice, and it'd be nice to have a centralized location for that.

Oh goddamn - prior to Corona my humblest and most fulfilling experience in life was playing chess ina punk-rock club; high on acid - a friend of mine on ecstasy and playing chess at like 3 AM. Like 5 pieces missing, a few replaced by bottle-caps with little markings and one of his pawns had to be replaced by a smaller-than-usual bishop. This fake bishop made me nervous as fuck.

On a side note, I third the chess channel.

Chess is fun and needs to be a thing for a channel.

Maybe board games and card games in general honestly.

How about a channel for making content for other games/making other games. I know we already have "Art" for that but I think a more specific channel for stuff pertaining specifically to making a video game/ content for a video game would be really cool and fun and I would use it a lot.

Also I would totally use the chess channel but only to post illegal moves and ICBMs

Fourthed on the Chess channel, maybe even like Technature said, making a general card-game/board-game channel that isn't quite like the TCG channel we have now.

I also would LOVE! to have a channel for setting up outside of ss13 games n game events n stuff, currently prodding about spaceman-discussion is disruptive sometimes and computergames is kind of general comp game discussion as opposed to a game setup channel.

I would ABSOLUTELY use this. I'd just want to be careful about making sure politics doesn't get mixed up in there, leave that for the Cool Zone.

This gives me an idea for a channel called space battles, where we discuss fictional conflicts (as in, a conflict that never happened or one that happened with an added twist)

Would second/third this because I do sometimes go off about a few of these topics and probably want to contain my nerdery; I do think disentangling these subjects as, shall we say, "academic" versus sociopolitical is important, like Wisecrack pointed out, since a lot of these topics are ones that are influenced by politics and things that are still divisive. I wouldn't know how to go about setting like "house rules" for that. How would we discuss something like Paradise Lost or WWI in this "Objective and Totally Thorough and Nuanced Way that Everyone Agrees Upon"?

For what it IS worth, I think a lot of people who do talk these subjects have a pretty good gauge anyways of when/how far they need to go on a subject that might poke at some loose or sensitive ends.

I would kind of like a specific channel that is for asking questions about in game stuff/ discussing game mechanics. You could say that is sort of what we already have in the game channels but it isn't really about going into the nitty gritty about stuff and just discussing mechanics/ways people like to mine or something.

I figure if we are throwing ideas out there I would throw that one out there
