I just recently did a reinstall and found the new byond client to suck major ass. Fortunately, you can still download the previous version from byond.com:
http://www.byond.com/download/build/498 ... _byond.exe
I'm not sure if that's the most recent version of 498, or if there are some necessary bugfixes in 499 that make it worth using, but I find at least that 498 works a lot better than the recent 499 on wine. You may also have your own reasons for preferring it.
Just in case anyone else didn't already know. Also, if there is a more recent version of 498, just use that in the url instead and it will probably still be downloadable.

The new BYOND client actually runs noticeably smoother than the old one for me. It's kind of up to you if that's worth the ads, though.

The ads are annoying but it puts money in the pocket of the BYOND guys without you really doing anything. They did also fix a lot of bugs recently, the lead Tom has decided to give up on trying to grow BYOND as a business and go back to tinkering with the code. Their plan is to support themselves on donations and ads and they've actually been active on their forums lately.
After talking to Tom in a thread over there some of us donated some cash and started running the new client. He's a decent guy. I don't mind ignoring a stupid flash ad for 15 seconds here and there if it keeps BYOND going. For all the troubles with the platform SS13 wouldn't exist without it.

New problem with Byond. Cant download anything, Since this morning I haven't been able to download updates, I tried other servers but couldn't download more then 100kb.
I tried clearing the cache, re installing 498 and tried 499. Anyone else having this issue? Its probably Byond.

AS OF THIS MOMENT BYOND HAS FORCED THE SERVER TO UPDATE TO 500, YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSION IN ORDER TO PLAY. I AM SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.

Ok, skimmed through the byond site and didn't see a payment option to get out of ads. Did I miss it or do they force ads on rich people too?

I'm pretty sure just being a byond member stops the ads.

Being a beyond member stops the ads, except for sometimes when your client forgets that you're a member and shows you ads anyways.
Being a Linux user that doesn't use Internet Explorer helps, though.

You need to add that domain to the list of restricted sites via Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Security -> Restricted Sites. When that's done, boom, no more ads.

Windows: Uninstall internet explorer (Who needs that shit anyway?)
Credit: Byond for saying you need IE to view ads.
