Bee husbandry and animal companions

Bees are given RPG style stats. These stats are inheritable when bee larvae are created. Larvae are created by combining feeding a queen bee the honey made from two different bees, producing a new bee with stats inherented from its parents using botany genetic inheritance rules.

The stats of bees affect them in several ways.
  • The honey they produce and the effects it has when consumed, cooked, or used in chemistry
  • The quantity produced, quality of, and characteristics of the wool bees produce and clothing made from it
  • The bees abilities when accomplishing tasks and performing in combat
In addition to stats, bees also gain a random trait or two unique to them that are very situationally useful. This traits are to give the bees specific utilities and personal quirks.

An extension of botany becomes devoted to breeding bees for use around the shuttle. Beekeepers raise larvae, who live in boxes where they produce honey that can be collected. A special box houses a queen bee, that can be feed the honey of bees to produce new larvae. The queen box also produces honey with special properties.

Feeding a bee honey made from a queen bonds the bee to the feeder. The bee will follow them, occasionally assisting them.

Bees can:
  • Defend their owner
  • Attempt to heal their owner
  • Hold items for their owner
  • Give or drop an item at a place pointed at in help intent
  • Retrive an item pointed at in grab intent
  • Attack a spot pointed at in harm intent
  • Wrestle a bee pointed at in disarm intent
Some things bees do passively, while others like pointing require a prompt from a whistle first. The bees stats effect how successful it is at performing a task.

When bees wrestle, they perform a series of moves and attacks against each other, using their stats and dice rolls to simulate a fight. The bees wrestle until one feints, awaking shortly after unharmed. The winning bee gains xp, which boosts certain stats and grants additional tasks the bees can perform.

Lorewise, bee breeding isn't allowed. However, I'd love to implement this for space mice and rats (and then you could have battles or shows or something!), and incorporate your fungus idea into this whole thing somehow.

Okay, but bees are iconic and would be more fun (edit: and wouldn't get confused with ghost critters) so the question is how do we adapt it to lore? Buying some starter honey from Bombeeni to bond a bee larva to you? From there you can mix various types of space fungus into their honey/kibble/ect to start getting adaptations perhaps?

I was going to suggest spiders initially, but thought bees would be more popular. We could also invent a critter that eats fungus, with the fungus types it eats at an early stage influencing the mature versions stats.

Maybe giant tardigrades?
