Atomicthumbs locked me in a shame cube for half an hour to ask what cuck meant.
#1
Atomicthumbs locked me in the shame cube on the secret server today about 30 minutes ago because he didn't know what "Cuck" meant. I feel like the logs could do a better job of explaining than I could. Here are the relevant parts

"Dick Gumshue [145.9] says, "Any good loot on the cuck mechanic?""

(The mechanic in question had blown himself up with his own trap)

OOC: atomicthumbs: Whoa now.

You have been shame-cubed by an admin! Take this embarrassing moment to reflect on what you have done.

You have been sent to the penalty box, and an admin should contact you shortly. If nobody does within a minute or two, please inquire about it in adminhelp (F1 key).

HELP: You: What did I do?

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: what does "cuck" mean

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: It's short for cuckhold. Cuckhold is someone who has a signifigant other who is not loyal to them.

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: Am I not allowed to say bad words here?

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: I don't understand

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: Were you using it as an insult?

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: Yeah.

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: It's slang

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: You've never heard someone call some a cuck?

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: I don't get it. How's that an insult?

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: No, I haven't. Where does it come from?

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: Are you memeing me here?

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: no just trying to figure out how that's an insult

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: You sent me to a butthurt cube instead of just using urban dictionary or something?

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: Are you for real?

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: look mate i'm an admin i do what i can with the tools available

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: why would i go see urban dictionary when i can ask you

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: Hell, just private message me instead of interrupting my fucking game because I said a word that confuses you

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: can you tell me one last thing? where does the word come from

Reply PM to-Atomicthumbs: cuckold (n.)kukewald, from Old French cucuault, from cocu (see cuckoo) + pejorative suffix -ault, of Germanic origin. So called from the female bird's alleged habit of changing mates, or her authentic habit of leaving eggs in another bird's nest. In Modern French the identity is more obvious: Coucou for the bird and cocu for the betrayed husband. German Hahnrei (13c.), from Low German, is of obscure origin. The second element seems to be connected to words for "ardent," and suggests perhaps "sexually aggressive hen," with transferal to humans, but Kluge suggests rather a connection to words for "capon" and "castrated." Related: Cuckoldry.

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: yeah but i've never heard it being used as an insult before

Admin PM from-Atomicthumbs: where's that specific use come from

At that point I told him I'm going to go write an admin complaint. It's been about 20 minutes now and I'm still in the cube. Unless there is some weird obscure rule against using the word cuck I don't understand why I was punished for using it. Am I missing something?

God damnit. I had it all color coded and nice looking. Stupid site formatting.

I acknowledge your complaint, but I'm biased in this matter so I'll let other admins chime in. I'll respect the need for due process here.

Hi, I'm not the admin you are complaining about but I would like to clarify some stuff. "Cuck" is short for the word "cuckold". Cuckold means: "a man whose wife deceives him by having a sexual relationship with another man." (Cambridge, 2017) Now, let's look at the rules of Goonstation, in particular, rule #4. The text of the summary of the rule is: "Bigotry and sexual content is a non-negotiable hard no." See anything wrong with those two things? I would also like to mention that people have been banned in the past because of this specific word and that specific rule. To quote my good friend Hufflaw: " 'Cuck' is an insulting reference to a sexual fetish that has no place on our servers because it's unfunny, dumb and gross. Please for the love of all that is good, stop arguing about it."

Some precedence:

You have to understand that that word isn't used in that context. It's more akin to calling someone a cunt or an asshole. That's an insult but it's not sexual or bigot-esque. It's common on other servers like tg, paradise, and colonial marines.

EX: "Those ops sure got cucked by those lubed floors."

As far as I'm aware -and I very well should be-, Goonstation is not operated nor owned by any other server.

i punched "what does cuck mean" into google and found this, OP: http://www.gq.com/story/why-angry-white-...ople-cucks

I worry you may be wildly misinformed! You might want to stop using the term so that others don't perceive you in a negative light. Best foot forward and all that. Cheers

Jesus christ, my point is that the word isn't used to describe someone who lets someone sleep with their wife. It's used to describe someone getting fucked over. There's nothing sexual about it. I mean seriously, I can't believe I'm having to explain what figurative language is.

I don't understand? GQ's been around since 1957 and is pretty well-respected. Is this a political thing?

So, I'm having finding this definition on a higher education-recommended dictionary source that is appropriate for citing in research papers. Could you direct me to one where the definition is more similar to how you have described the meaning of the word is? Also, please read the rejected ban appeals. They might prove useful in the future.

Language on the internet and language in research papers are two very different things.

I'm not sure I understand your point, but here's another article on the subject from a very nice organization my grandma from Mississippi taught me about: https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2015...ative-meme

she always had their magazine in her magazine basket, and they do lots of good things. I miss her a lot

I still have my grandma with me. She doesn't remember much these days but she spends a lot of time reading woodworking magazines. I know she doesn't like them but they probably remind her of my grandfather.

So, were you unable to find a definition in any respected dictionary source? I'm very confused if this a valid meaning of the word then, or just 'slang' in your social group.

Yeah, sure. It's slang among places like 4chan and occasionally dwarf fortress players.

That would be "carp."
