ADAPTED FROM A POST IN GENERAL DISCUSSION

My idea requires some retooling of the existing genetics DNA machinery, but I think it'd work.

First, separate the activator/injector vending and recycling into a third machine. It's kinda weird for a computer to be directly vending and recycling needles anyway.

Next, Re-purpose the little wash closet to the left of the morgue into a tiny genetics access booth, with two chairs, and two computers. Move the rightmost sleeper in the medical lobby over to where that small table by the north morgue entrance is now. Turn the walls into glass, and put two injector/activator units directly opposite the DNA computers. Flank the injector/activator units with DNA scanners.

Now you've got public access scanners and injector/activator vendors, but you still need the geneticists in order to actually do anything. 


So we need an incentive for genetics to use these machines versus using the more secluded ones.

I've come up with a rather clever solution. The public consoles are upgraded models, and can splice TWO chromosomes into a single gene! Since they can ONLY get chromosomes by recycling activators into those specific machines, they'll be forced to use them if they want super-superpowers.

It's genius!

The crew gets super powers, genetics quits being a bunch of recluses, and everyone's happy!

Hell, this even provides a justification for why geneticists have medbay access.

Related but optional idea: Make it so people can stick cash into the injector units in order get injectors of stored mutations without a geneticist's help. The geneticist does, however, have to designate which ones are for sale.

I'm going to go with no. Superpowers and such should mean risking people in your work area.

They are risking people entering their work area by the very nature of this design. The geneticists have to go out into the public hallway in order to actually get any injectors or activators for themselves.

Unless, of course, they don't want those sweet double chromosome spliced powers for themselves.

On a slightly related note, it might be a good idea to bring back the DNA scanners geneticists used to have built into their PDAs. I know that the crew's genetic potential is automatically added to the database upon arrival, but if someone gets cloned, they get a whole new set of potential genes, and it kind of disappoints me that there's not a way to add them into the database.

What if geneticists instead just shove humanized monkeys in the public upgraded scanners ?

Why should it? I mean the walls and doors barely stop people from busting in anyways, and sec rarely responds to a geneticists cries for help because of intruders. This setup has less assholes busting into the room people are using for genetics, and more assholes mugging each-other for cash to get those sweet mutations, and people will hate geneticists less because they're suddenly able to provide a valuable service for the crew rather than solely benefiting themselves.

I am all for this idea. If everyone is a superpower filled genetic abomination, then nobody is a superpower filled genetic abomination.

Also this encourages genetics to actually function and contribute somehow

They'd still have to walk all the way out into the halls to use activators on the monkeys. 

The inconvenience factor is high without a human patient.

I think this is a good idea if properly implemented. There would have to be benefits and drawbacks from the machine, because they would have to let people in their 'secluded chambers' if they didn't use it. I dislike the idea of the department being separated though. Maybe with a chute between the two? dunno

I don't really want to be a fun-hater, but two chromosomes on a gene would be quite overpowered. Think of a phase shift that does not cost any stability, or empowered versions of spells that cost no stability. I don't know, maybe reasearch is faster on those computers or it comes with some other special feature.

A chute is a great idea!


As far as the chromosomes go, I figured it wans't overpowered since I think it was actually planned to be implemented at some point.

There's already code to handle a synchronized empowered super fart.

This is what the port-a-gene was supposed to do. Still pissed right the fuck off it got removed.
Been considering bringing it back with a limitation that it only works while in station areas.

That would probably work too.

Edit: Possibly make it so that the port-a-gene doesn't accept any geneticists in the scanner. Justify it with "internal dereliction of duty subroutines."

Part of the problem with the porta-gene was the non-geneticists were also stealing them and running off with them. Regardless of who stole them, people took them to the depths of maintenance to privately work on them, and seeing as to how big maintenance is on Cog2, most restrictions wouldn't work in making the porta-gene feasible.

Besides, the geneticists never entered the porta-gene themselves, they just shoved a monkey into them.
