Sleeper Meds
#1
At the moment medical sleepers inject saline to keep patients stabilized. While saline does work to keep a patient out of shock, if they've already progressed into cardiac failure/arrest it's not going to do much stabilizing at all. It's usually much easier to just drag the patient into medbay proper for the real meds like atropine and epinephrine. So it's no surprise nobody actually uses sleepers.

This is a shame, since sleepers do theoretically provide a useful service: buying the doctor some time. Unfortunately all they're really useful for is healing up minor brute/burn damage due to the unlimited saline supply. To remedy this, I suggest sleepers be given epinephrine and maybe atropine as optional injections along with saline.

Perhaps sleepers should stop patients' bodies from changing?

Damage stops building, diseases stop advancing (pathology ones and the other ones), chemicals stop decaying, radiation stops depleting.

Maybe, and this is where I feel it might be a bit much, make it so it does that above, but can also have chemicals loaded into it while somebody is in it, so you can put a patient in stasis and treat them at the same time.

So essentially you would load a patient in, examine their vitals and chemicals in their blood, and load in chems that would save them so that when you remove them from stasis you don't have to worry about them dying on you. Maybe it could be like the cloners and come with upgrades, like an internal defib or something.

This would make it considerably more useful, though perhaps if both changes are used it would be TOO useful, however the counter to this could be to make the controls Doctor locked and to make it so there is only one INSIDE Medbay.

My apologies if this is viewed as a derailment, it's just that I saw the topic and started thinking about it.

Medics already have to do basically nothing.

There's so many med kits around the station people just heal themselves, even if they're coming to med-bay people prefer to sprint into the pharmacy to heal themselves.

I haven't seen the cryo tubes used in months. Why make it easier for medics to have nothing to do.
It would just be another feature not ever used in med-bay.

The only way sleepers will ever be used is if the patient can use them on their own. As things are now, it's easier to throw yourself in cryo than to get any use out of the sleepers.

Can't you already attach beakers to sleepers? I could swear I've done that once by accident.

Yes, make sleepers act as stasis vats

I agree with the stasis vat idea. It will make them INFINITELY more useful and, therefore, will make them actually used by actual players.

The statis idea is definitely a good one, though I'd rather it slowed down life cycles by 1/2 or 1/4 rather than negate them altogether.

I think the stasis idea here is probably the best and most efficient idea here. As of right now nobody ever uses the sleep meds for their proper purpose, they're pretty much useless right now because it's much easier and faster to just treat the patient with your standard meds than have them hop inside one of these.

Sleepers should not have healing chems in them, because that niche is already taken up by cryo and cryo does it way better anyways. I agree with Mofleaker in that it shouldn't completely stop all of the cycles, but just slow them down. Maybe have some module in space somewhere that lets you put people in stasis indefinitely?

Please do not do this. I want more things to do as a doctor not less.

Negative.

But statis wouldn't take away from the job in any way. All it would do is buy a doctor who isn't lugging around an entire pharmacy worth of meds some time to prepare a treatment. The dude in the sleeper is still fucked without your help.

Doctoring is too easy as it is now. It's like blap heres a patch or hop in the cryo for radiation treatment. This just takes away the little stress there is to the job of having 5 people in crit and trying to save them all, which is still horrendously easy, especially with haine's change to how death is called

I agree doctoring is too easy, and I did take this idea from the stasis body bags that /tg/ has, and on /tg/ medical is taken a bit differently, with individual body parts being injured rather than a single patch being a cure-all for your whole body.

Perhaps removing cryo in exchange for this would be a fair trade? Considering it's sort of like cryo but requires the doctors to still treat the patient.

Hopefully in the future medical has come to a point where both can be in medbay in pairs and healing people is a bit more difficult than putting a styptic patch on a buckshot wound, but for now I still think this is an interesting idea.

I could definitely see the merit in merging sleepers and cryotubes for space conservation and simplicity. That being said, I'd be sad at getting rid of cryotubes as they're the cooler looking of the two. D:

Medical treatment is quick and simple simply because it needs to be that way. One competent MD can take care of the whole station when not dealing with redsuits, skilled redborgs, or redmins. The problem is there aren't enough competent doctors who are actively doctoring. A valid treatment for the average doctor is "Welp, yer certainly fucked alright. Off to the cloner with ye! *fart" This is certainly lazy, but it's a logical assessment if you're dealing with deep crit and not carrying around the pentetic, synth, and other chemicals in your superkit that took you 15 minutes to put together. In this and many other cases, a sleeper that works like a stasis pod will actually increase the amount of things an average MD can do.

So what am I up for? Yeah, stasis pods. Keep the cryotubes, cause they're cool, and make the sleepers decrease the effect of each cycle by a good deal. If it can reduce the dependency on cloning then slapping a few more sleepers in medlobby wouldn't be a bad idea. I personally wouldn't mind it if cloners got nerfed to the point that the random joe didn't get cloned; or even if they were gotten rid of completely. Though if it went that far more countermeasures against death like this would be needed.
