shitbot already posts mentorhelps into admin chat, most admins never answer. it shouldn't be that difficult to set up a mentor irc chat that would let mentors help people regardless of what server they're on or whether they're even on a server at all.
I know that, personally, I have irc on my phone and so am pretty much always on it, but i'm rarely in-game anymore

Yep. I was right.
Also the argument that someone can ask for help in game tends to fall on its face when certain factors pop in. Such as being on a low population server. Being the only one in your department. And having some seriously shitty crew mates that won't bother to even show someone the basics of engine set up or genetics work. That isn't as common as it once was, but isn't unheard of. Having a mentor irc just helps those of us who have volunteered to be mentors to help more new players than before.

I think this is a good idea and it would be useful. If some mentors want to go the extra mile to help someone then let them.
