Archive.org just released 2000+ DOS-era games that are playable inside a browser.

I am already thrilled by names like these:
Freddy Hardest in South Manhattan
by Iron Byte
Crime Time
by Starbyte Software
Elevators from Hell
I loved this damn game as a kid:

The tech behind the releases is kinda interesting.
the programmers behind all this fancy tech used a software called emscripten (which converts llvm code into javascript code, and it can convert pretty much any programming language that can create llvm code) to port emulators (specifically mess and dosbox) into javascript (JSMESS and Em-Dosbox). Meaning some nerds somewhere took a bunch of source code for emulators and made it work in a webpage by converting it into something webpages can use. Then some other nerds took a bunch of roms and combined it with the emulators into a massive nerd collection of games.

It's questionable legally but really neat.
I could see some games being kinda neat with this. Like star wars dark forces.

STARFLIGHT!!!
Oh holy shit! Time to finally beat this monster!
Can't thank you enough for the treasure trove Cogs.
...disclamer: do not play Starflight unless you have a year or so to spare and DO NOT SPOIL ANYTHING FOR YOURSELF except the basics of playing the game...

About that, the Internet Archive secured a DMCA exemption back in 2006 for obsolete software. (
https://blog.archive.org/2006/11/29/inte...right-act/) Only since last year have emulation portability and collection efforts ramped up to the point where wide access is possible. It's still a grey area but blanket DMCA requests are out under fair use. Games are only removed when a commercial outlet is available, and only when people are diligent enough to report them.
Also if you somehow get bored of DOS games, here's a bunch of other stuff Jason Scott's emulation crew has cooked up or curated:
https://archive.org/details/internetarcade Internet Arcade - watch JSMESS go to work on 649 (was 900, got whittled down by companies) arcade ROMs!
https://archive.org/details/consolelivingroom Console Living Room - JSMESS tackles consoles from the 70's to the 90's
https://archive.org/details/historicalsoftware Historical Software Collection - sampler platter of milestone games and software
https://archive.org/details/tosec TOSEC Software Collection - raw files for practically every platform imaginable
https://archive.org/details/coverdiscs Cover Discs - shareware and demo CDs from all sorts of places; magazines, websites etc.
(if you're not in the v2 layout, try it now it's pretty slick)
