It's no secret that making the perfect canister bomb is not only dangerous when you're testing the bomb, but also creating the bomb, as well.
What I propose is making a completely Virtual toxins; it would be identical to the current toxins and connect to the current test chamber (which would probably need to be made larger).
In this way, people could experiment with making canister bombs without endangering all of research and they could test them out without round-ending consequences (especially as a non-traitor).
The downside, of course, is that you're just standing around somewhere as an easy target to regular traitor.

The problem with something like this is that, since the virtual toxins lab would only make virtual bombs that only work in VR, it turns toxins into a big giant traitor room where only traitors would go and make a real bomb.

We have a fair number of deepspace stations to test canister bombs out on, such as the Diner. It even comes with a few free test subjects!
As for the hazards of MAKING them, I'm all for toxins turning into a raging fireball completely by accident. Experimentation is the core principal of the scientific method, after all.

Experimentation with toxins would be funnier if it actually followed sensible physics instead of arbitrary gameplay mechanics

The problem becomes towards the higher end when you want to test the really big canister bombs; at some point they just start deleting the diner, and you don't know if they go bigger than that or not.

I'm not talking about just toxins, I'm talking about literally half the entire research division.

Why are there two topics for this?

An idea that somehow manages to be on the same level as the "Chemistry simulator PDA cart".
Don't play with fire if you can't stand the heat, etc.

I believe you missed the point; it's not the individual operating toxins that I'm concerned about, it's someone doing legitimate non-traiterous research endangering most of science just to do so.

It sounds rather analagous to an engine hellburn that rampages out of control and starts melting the entire lower half of the station. I have nothing against the hellburn, and can't really come up with a reason why I would be against the same thing happening to science. Workplace accidents of the more extreme variety are something that should be encouraged, imo. It can not only spice up an otherwise slow round, but nothing brings a crew together more than fighting the fireball that was once the science wing so they can clear a path to the escape shuttle.
If anything, more departments need massive failure things that can happen, but that's outside the scope of this thread.

I was expecting a suggestion for poisoning people playing VR basketball.

I liked the VR pad idea better, that way people can still use the real toxin's equipment. Making toxin's VR would just make traitors super obvious.

I've never seen Toxins endanger the rest of Research. The canisters usually explode before the combustion chambers get hot enough to superheat the rest of the department, and plasma fires don't damage or penetrate walls. The only way Toxins can hurt anything outside of Toxins is if some idiot purposely sets off a bomb.

If a plasma fire gets hot enough, the heat will conduct through the walls and floors.

from the other thread on this exact same idea:
UrsulaMejor Wrote:Perhaps a "digitizer" that can "turn an item virtual" by teleporting it from a designated tile in the science lab to a designated tile in the vr testing chamber.
The digitizer can't be used on humans unless emagged and sparks obviously when it is

The problem is that a lot of people are afraid to get banned over an explosion accident.
Space already has two chem labs and one lab for electrician. Repurposing some derelict as a bomb mixing area wouldn't be a bad idea.
