Bind Z to "use item on opposite hand"
#1
Basically, the one direction of diagonal movement is totally pointless, cause you can't move somewhere diagonally if you couldn't get there by taking a right-angle around it anyway. Instead, it should be bound to using your active hand on your inactive hand, like putting something in/opening a toolbox.

I think diagonal running is less about getting places and more about getting there quickly. It lets you cross a 2-tile distance in 1 step, making it useful for 'dodging' in fights and stuff.

Wait Z lets you move diagonally? Are there other diagonal buttons? That would be fucking useful.

Z is 'move south-west'. That's the one and only diagonal direction you can move in.

Why don't we have more? On another thought why don't we have more movement keys on the numpad? 8,4,6,and 2 would be up, left, right, down and 4 would be switch hands and then 7,9,1,and 3 would be diagonal. Then you can place other hotkeys around in numpad.

If you just slam on down and left at the same time you get the exact same effect IIRC.

Make Z the diagonal button which changes your movement to diagonal (Up for UpperLeft, Right for upper right, Down for Lower Right, Left for Lowwer Left when Z is toggled).

Diagonal movement is actually faster than normal directions, because each movement 'tick' is used to traverse two tiles (one down, one left) instead of just one tile. It may not be apparent unless there's some lag, but it is in fact twice as fast as standard movement. There are not many areas on the station where you can use this speed boost to your advantage, but it makes a big difference in open areas like space when you're podfighting and such.

Opening up all the diagonal options would make for very strange movement controls, because it would always be beneficial to walk diagonally instead of NorthWestEastSouth.

Regardless of all of that, the hotkey to use the item in your opposite hand could be cool. Maybe a button that isn't Z?

That's the non-WASD hotkey.

The way hotkeys work on Goonstation (like the switch hands or activate item hotkeys) is by binding the diagonal movement buttons to perform an action and then stopping the diagonal movement of the mob.

So the diagonal upleft, upright, and downright buttons are already bound, which is why diagonal movement in those directions doesn't exist

Ah. Well huh. That's interesting.
