Chemistry VR - For investigative chemistry
#1
I do a lot of chemistry when I am bored, and often find myself going through an entire round looking for chemicals to mix in and see what happens. However the downside to this is that discovering new chems can take entire rounds, and if you're using the bathtub it's very easy for some assistant to climb in and waste an entire round's work. The idea I'm bringing up is a VR for chemists, which would contain a chem dispenser that could dispense ingredients not normally found in the chem dispenser as well as being able to, if you type in the ingredients that make up a chemical, dispense that chemical. Obviously you couldn't take anything you made back with you, but I think it would be a good tool to help avoid situations where you have to re-make a huge list of chemicals you were working with the round before because you were unable to finish.

I like this. It also seems like it would help avoid new people to chemistry burning the whole department down, or gassing everyone with some god awful concoction they made on accident.

Isn't accidents the whole crux of chemistry?

Might be interesting, but it almost sounds like it makes it too easy. Some chemicals are hard to discover for a reason, yknow?

Still, I could definitely use the practice myself. I figure it would have to be a VR goggles thing, to allow you to get properly murdered while you're dicking around in cyberspace.

This takes most if not all of the point out of chemistry. The accidents, the experimenting, the gathering. And most importantly the accidents.
I don't think this is a good idea.

I don't think this is a good idea.

Easy: Make it so that it has a degree of failure (getting told to get the wrong ingredient can turn the perfect medicine into a bomb!) and make it so that attempting to use secret chems causes the VR Simulation to crash and the VR Goggles to flash you. Also, the goggles are hidden in General storage.

I just don't know, man, Chemistry is shitty enough already without everyone knowing how to make explosive hellfire bombs. Having it inevitably happen every round would make it lose any charm it could possibly have (it doesn't have much to begin with).

As it is I'm not sure chemistry should be given even more crutches; they already made a big list of shit to do in chem on the forum, and there's that place out in space that serves basically this purpose anyway.

Also the flash idea doesn't work: If you made that chem and got flashed, you'd know it worked the way you intended, thus enabling you to replicate it in the real world. That's not a proper deterrent.

I definitely see your point about the accidents. Taking all the accidental fires and shit out would be totally lame, and I hadn't even thought of that when I suggested VR. Maybe instead there should be a bathtub in the chem lab/bar.

Bathtub in/near bar:
No, there's a bathtub nearby in the common room or w/e you call it. That, and bar science should be regarded as 2nd grade chemists when compared to the dudes in actual chemistry.

Bathtub near chemistry
Most definitely. But there should only be one, so if 2 chemists want to use it for two separate reasons, they'll have to fight man on drugged man in the ring.

I'm doing up a map design now to incorperate a bath-tub near chemistry and not look outta place in Photoshop, I have a fair idea what it'll look like, will post here in a bit.

So yeah, that emergency storage room, is now a WC. I put a warning sign beside the bathtub because nanotrasen obviously discourages bathtub chemistry (but does nothing in its power to prevent it). The toilet is there for when security/RD comes and they want to swirly chemists for being jerks.

The emergency storage room instead was combined with the delivery room, I just extended it down two tiles, and across by one to fit in the emergency stuff. Seems to look pretty decent there.

there should be more bathrooms in general I approve this map alteration

I second the support of that design, looks really good!

What if instead of a tiny little virtual chemistry room you can faff about in, it's instead more like the bomb testing machine? Load up a beaker of your horrendous hellmix into the machine, slap on a pair of goggles, then press a button to decide if you want to try it with foam or smoke. Some virtual clowns would probably be necessary as well so you can see their effects on mobs and whatnot.

This way the russian satellite maintains its position as a secluded area for experimentation, and it gives people a place to test out various combinations of chemicals to see what's best for killing and/or healing people, and the best method of disersing it.

Most if not all of the chemicals are listed on the wiki. Testing them is kinda pointless unless you want to be an effective jerk.

I think it would be a lot more jerk friendly if certain reagents were never supposed to go anywhere near each other.

You know those medical labels that say something like "If you are taking this drug don't take these other drugs because they might kill you."

Or those moments where someone's got a disease/problem but you don't really have an idea how to fix it/medicate it.

Virtual chemistry would probably be perfect for that. Test Home remedies on crewmen. Also could lead to pathology coming back because you can either be a traitor jerk and make super nasty bug chemical combos, or market your own "CURE" that at least keeps the symptoms at bay for a tiny bit after you've tested both the disease and your homebrew tonic on a virtual man.

Something like that, but not necessarily obvious unless a chemist happens to learn the side effects on a virtual human or some doctor accidentally injects it. Or some pubbie was taking painkillers and alcohol again.

As for putting a bathroom next to chemistry, yeah sounds good.
