Stupid Rat's Mentor Application :]
#1
Usual character name: Iris Rat/DR. EVIL

BYOND username: Stupid rat

Discord username (if you are on our discord): _stupid_rat

Recommended by (if applicable): 444explorer, Mintyphresh

Goon servers you play: 3 & 4

Reason for application + game experience (300 word minimum):

I've been a member of the Goonstation community for a little over two years now, nearing on 3 years in a few months (May 18th, 2023), and ever since I've started playing the game I immediately fell head over heels with the whole concept of the game, where I've spent all-nighters cackling non-stop at funny spacemen going [fart.ogg], screaming and exploding and whatnot.

Not only that but the community was one of, if not the most friendly and welcoming ones I've stumbled across in my time, Goonstation is the main reason I am the person that I've become today, and I wouldn't change a thing that happened, along with the fact that it's been an amazing outlet for my creativity thus far. I've made plenty of stupidly fun memories with loads of different folks, I originally started on classic, and about 6 months into my time here, shifted over to RP where I've remained since.

Something I miss in particular about Goonstation was the feeling of extreme unfamiliarity I had when I first started playing, the pure bewilderment I experienced in my first few rounds genuinely cannot be matched by anything else I've ever experienced in my life, and this mentor application doubles as my love letter to the Goonstation community, and all the wonderful times they've given me, and hopefully ones I've also contributed in return.

And the main reason I've decided to open my mentor application is because I'd like a more accessible route to teach new players, even while I'm not actively playing or if I don't happen to be in the exact time and place a player needs help figuring something out.

Moving past the heartfelt yapping and onto actual game experience..

Engineering:

Engineering is by FAR the department I have the most experience in, with several major projects and achievements under my belt such as the 850 MW nuclear reactor, the 100 GW singularity, and the soon to be Petawatt Singularity, so on and so forth, I've also either learned or developed fully stable setups for both the TEG and nuclear reactor without utilizing mechcomp. A funny thing I love to think about is that a fair few people in the community regard me as some sort of "Engineering Cryptid" which is a really awesome nickname tbh. My proudest moment in Engineering however was when somebody named one of my singularity feeder setups after my character, DR. EVIL.

Medical:

Medical probably comes in second place in terms of departments I'm most experienced in, I can usually handle large crowds of people who need medical attention quite well if I'm for some reason on my own, though teamwork is always preferred, especially in departments like Medical. Most of my experience comes in the form of standard doctoring, however I can still mostly operate robotics (outside of forgetting how to reinforce cyborg parts sometimes) and I know the basics of Genetics (mostly just not understanding how to combine genes), I love exchanging healing mixes and recipes with other doctors mid-round during our downtime.

Science:

Though I don't have much to say in terms of Science, since it's mostly just me staring at either the chemicals wiki or slapping numbers into the vortex telescience calculator, I am quite adept at working artifacts, but again, not much to say in terms of science because there just isn't much to it.. HOWEVER I have been meaning to learn packets/guardbuddies for quite some time now, along with the siphon, though I still struggle trying to grasp the concept of how DWAINE works outside of the artifact terminal  it's okay, he'll be up again before you know it

Cargo/Mining:

Cargo and Mining I feel are two sides of the same coin, both can be incredibly vital to a station's upkeep at times, whether it's an Engineer with a project that needs a *lot* of materials or the HoS looking to arm the crew with phasers in the case of an extreme emergency, I am thankful to know Cargo enough to fulfill most requisitions, and find it as a fun opportunity to encourage inter-department coordination, even if for a short time, and I enjoy using mining as a chance to get away from the chaos happening on-site and listen to my playlist while shit goes DOWN over the radio :]

Civilian:

Moving onto the Civillian department in general, most of my experience here comes as a Bartender, where I love setting up a decorated little hub where everyone can breathe for a moment after a long shift, and then roleplay being incredibly drunk off their ass once they (regrettably) ask for a shot of bo jack.

As for Chef, I can't comment much on it as I don't play it nearly as often as I used to, but I do enjoy making the occasional themed breakfast, lunch and dinner across a shift, whether it's around a certain culture or concept.

In terms of Rancher knowledge, I admittedly only know enough to get myself void chickens and then run around being a little (literal) pest.

Botany is where my experience in Goon had originally began, and I know enough about botany in order to make things like seethers, lifeweed, etc., all the FUN plants that you get in Botany, but I sort of left the botany scene shortly before I had decided to learn how to effectively splice plants together to make things like triple C fruits or sleepy peanuts (do those still exist actually? i haven't seen them in AGES)

As for all the miscellaneous roles, I don't play them often if at all but I do find them extremely entertaining when other people play them. (Things such as clown, staff assistants, etc.)

Security:

I used to be very fond of Security, knowing the mechanics of my equipment (excluding knowing how the hell to use the wavegun EFFECTIVELY), and I like to imagine I was at least a moderately engaging security player, knowing the basic etiquette of subtracting the time someone's been cuffed from their actual brig timer, making sure to let the antags get away with their shenanigans if it's still early/undeveloped, etc., though I've taken a break because holy hell does getting into an intense fight make me shaky.

Silicon:

I do not play Silicon often enough to make any comment, other than knowing the intricacies of writing AI laws, and how to make sure they don't circumvent your own orders. Though I do intend on beginning to play AI again soon, as I've had a chance to play it for a short while recently and remembered how fond I actually am of the role.

Command:

Last but certainly not least, Command, the people that run the station, most often into the ground, I find Command roles to be a good way of managing the flow of the round, and knowing how to make the most out of a given command round whether as the Captain or CE is very important to me, Command is a great way to get involved in the meat of the antagonist's shenanigans imo, and proves for some great RP, and it's most important to know how to give and take, as it follows the same rule as Security where you do have the power to shut something down in its entirety, but it's good to know when to let something fly if it makes for a more interesting or fun round.

As for the things I mentioned that I do not have much experience on, I do wholeheartedly intend to (if slowly) improve my knowledge in each and every department to finally be known as The Hypernerd.

Admittedly something I've learned as what could be considered a long-standing member of the community is that there will ALWAYS be something new to learn, which I will gladly accept with open arms, and I will try my damnedest to make sure other people can keep up as well, I love sharing new technical stuff I've learned or come up with when it comes to in-game mechanics.

One more thing I'd like to note, which I'm not entirely sure if it's worth mentioning but I like being proud of myself,  but I enjoy teaching people about mechanics from a ground-up basis, making sure they understand each fundamental component and then once they know how the very basics work and are able to do it themselves I point them in the direction of experimentation and let them have their own fun, and I think seeing how effective this method of mentoring can be is really what drove me to write this application... That and the tons of people who have shouted at me to write this thing already.

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS !!!! HAVE A GOOD DAY LALALALA. sorry if the application sound really corporate. my brain just sorta switches into "oh shit i gotta be serious" mode though it's good to be silly...  queen greater domestic space-bee

Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will):

I can mainly recall a one-month ban for abusing a noclip exploit, I've thankfully put aside that sort of behavior from myself (which i HOPE has been evident), but other than that I've eaten a handful of five-minute joke bans, and a pair of false flag bans from using a VPN.

Active player who's around often and has taught me a fair few things personally. Rat is by far one of the most experienced players when it comes to Engineering and niche interactions currently, if not the most experienced! I'm often in genuine awe of his talent for figuring this stuff out! We could definitely use someone like him on the team, specific engineering questions being the death of us all. On top of that, Rat is also a very kind player who keeps his cool throughout all my interactions in round or in discord. I don't see any failings on his part.

As per my recommendation, I would like to see you as a mentor. +1.

This guy is always finding something new, niche, or bugs, so many bugs, or using the game mechanics to their fullest to create abominations that are as impressive as scary, and while they're showing that abomination off to you and explaining how it works they will decorate it with delightful absurd roleplay. Definitely the person to ask for help with Engineering and I do it from time to time (only to forget what was said soon after because I don't play Engineer much but that's besides the point) but if I had a newbee or someone looking to learn pretty much anything on hand and no time to show them around the farty game myself, I'd direct them to Stupid Rat to get them to fall in love with the game just as much. And even outside of the teaching aspect, interacting with them is just plainly fun and I always look forward to seeing them online even if I only spectate or catch glimpses in the station's hallways.
101% recommendation, +1 without a doubt :]

I've known stupid rat for a decent amount of time now and I believe they are one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to the various mechanics of Goonstation, but beyond that they have always shown a great inclination towards helping people and being positive.

I firmly believe that they have the capability to provide a lot of good and useful advice to newbees and experienced players alike. I have always seen them act in a manner where they treat everyone well, and I believe they have shown great intention and improvement over their previous bans.

+1 from me

Incredibly friendly and inclusive ingame and on the discord, always willing to teach new and old players things with a great attitude. Full of knowledge especially in engineering and have seem them share it with delight. I think they'd make great use of the extra tools that come with mentorship

Not only do I see Rat taking initiative (both in-game and in the Discord) to explain how certain things/game mechanics work, but they also go into detail as to why things work the way that they do. Their understanding and grasp of the game mechanics is both broad and deep enough that, frankly, I was surprised when I found out they weren't a mentor already; their attitude is great, they're approachable and friendly, and I would love to see them in the mentor role. An inspirational player in all respects. Easy +1.

do not let this user anywhere near glue.

i consider Rat a friend/acquaintance, so this response will be inherently biased. but, I do find that Rat is both knowledgeable and I personally trust them not to metacommunicate. In fact, I've coordinated with Rat a few times to do some reactor shenanigans n such, and but all metacomms have either: Occurred before or after a round, or as acknowledgements to a joking reference or something during a round. They've stuck with chatting through in-game means even when, realistically, we probably could've easily gotten away with just using discord or something to coordinate our reactor efforts.

in short: yeah they don't metacomm and, personally, pass my vibe check. plus also they stink, give em the purple. +1

I've run into Rat here and there on server's 3 and 4, and I've always had pleasant interactions with them. I remember them offering to teach me how to do some engineering thingy once. +1 from me.

I cannot say anything about Rat that hasn't already been mentioned. They're kind, knowledgeable (especially in engineering matters) and have both motivation and ability to teach. I've frequently seen them answer questions in the discord and ingame, where they include new and familiar players alike. Very dedicated to finding answers if they don't have them, for example by codediving or starting up a local session. Definitely deserves a strong +1 from me.

My bias is implicit because Rat is a friend, but yeah, I'd be happy to see him as a mentor. He has the knowledge for it and obscure engineering mechanics seem like a blind spot for the current team. Also he's online when most other mentors seem to be offline.

I fairly regularly see him dedicate much of a round to teaching trainees and, despite our characters being close, he has been consistently willing to postpone our RP for the sake of showing a newbee the ropes. That's a good sign.

I've seen rat around the servers and the discord all the time, and they've always been very kind, helpful, and curious to learn about anything they don't already know. Ditto on everything everyone else has already said here, big and huge ups for them to become a mentor!

So, same as some people in this thread, Rat is a friend of mine. However, this doesn't take away from the fact that they would (and currently are), an amazing mentor. They frequently take time out of their round if they see a trainee or someone whom doesn't exactly understand the mechanics behind engineering (or anything else!) to teach them and never makes them feel stupid for not knowing something.

There're too many good things to say about Rat, so I'll summarize it by saying, if I was a new player right now, I'd love to have a mentor like Rat around. (Not to say the current team isn't amazing or anything!)

+1 from me, love this stupid guy.

I can only echo the sentiment other's have expressed and while it's been a hot minute since i got to have extended interactions with stupid rat, i only ever remember entertaining and enjoyable moments. Always a good sport to interact with in round, seems very knowledgable on many things and willing to help. I would trust DR EVIL to give critical advice and lend a helping hand as mentor. EVIL is the new good.

I honestly have nothing more to add that hasn’t already been said. Outstanding player, very kind IC and OOC and isn’t afraid to go along with the bit while teaching. 10/10. +1 from me!

Nothing more I can add to what's already been said. They're a friendly player and willing to help out people and teach them. A friendly face in game and on discord and is very knowledgeable. Genuinely a good, friendly person.
