Making Wraith scarier
#1
So, I've been thinking about this a bit and I have always felt that wraith never really SPOOKED the way it should and that it's RP opportunities were pretty scarce in practice and I feel like having a menacing ghost aboard the station should not just inflict chaos but also doubt and dread. Poltergeist does the best job at doing this with the ability to posess and mimic other people but I feel like it could be taken further.

Most ghost movies involve the ghost appearing to one particular person in a house, driving them insane and eventually killing them. I think it would be fun and very spooky if somehow when a ghost manifests, they can choose a specific person to see them, and talk directly to that person, say menacing things and the like...make them think they're going mad when nobody believes them and then once they've been driven completely insane you turn on the rest of the crew. I know you can already do that to a limited extent, however I feel that the mechanics of wraith don't encourage allot of rp and more just waiting for monkies/people to die in the station rather than build up your spookiness organically by scaring people. A sanity mechanic wouldn't be unwelcome either. slowly give someone space madness the more you talk to them or manifest to them.

It would be pretty awesome if some more RP friendly changes could be made like that, as well as possibly giving the person you are cursing or spooking the ability to see you the worse off their sanity gets so you could actually fight back. Probably not doable or realistic but I think it'd make wraith more fun to not only play but play against since most wraith rounds I've seen devolve into pure chaos and an early shuttle call.

I hope at a minimum this gets people thinking about positive ways to change wraith antag for the better. a slightly ill greater domestic space-bee

Being able to like, target haunt, people as a trickster would make sense. Makes alot of sense with trickster too, given its the one thats the most "spooky" for RP out of all of them so making their colleagues think they are talking to non-existent people would be a very fun tool.

I am thinkin, it would obviously have to have reduced WP generation since if people cant actually see you, shouldnt be getting the points for it. And you would have to remain somewhat close to the person who you chose to view you, so you cant roam around as an invisible manifested trickster. could probably make it like an active ability which directly pulls you to haunt once you use it, target your victim and then itll just haunt you immediately and for the duration of the modified haunt if you get too far from them, you fade back into the ether.

Honestly it could be interesting letting harbingers haunt looking like corpses/skeletons and being able to talk, and the plaguebringer being able to haunt looking like rotten and bloated corpses. with appropriately garbled and fucked up speech too.

One idea I had ages ago was expanding the list of things that could be decayed beyond the emag list.  Decay would still work like an emag on the emaggable stuff, but you would also be able to do things like decay sinks or showerheads to make them dispense blood instead of water.  Or spiders.  Thinking about it now it'd probably be best as a separate ability from decay so the atmospheric stuff doesn't come at the expense of the murder stuff.

But yeah, I do think that wraith needs more abilities that are less focused on killing and more on emphasizing the horror.  They're named like Lovecraftian monstrosities, let them spread madness and fear!

I like the idea of Madness being a thing they can do, similar to how on Neon you can become temporarily mad and get temp antag status, I feel like it'd be cool to have one of the wraith forms do that. As far as the emag list, I like the idea of haunting bathrooms and causing flooding, maybe even causing sewage flooding instead of just water if a toilet gets Decayed.
