Mentor Application- Cropsey - Ratt Ratmann/Symes
#1
Usual character name: Ratt Ratmann/Symes (Anton 4145/von Fennec, Jurij Domogarow)
BYOND username: cropsey
Discord username (if you are on our discord): cropseyy
Recommended by (if applicable): N/A.
Goon servers you play: 3, 4.

Reason for application + game experience (300 word minimum): I have over 1.9k hours in game, and over time as there's a player turnover, I've noticed that a level of skill has been lost- newer players just aren't getting the same level of depth in mechanics as there has been in the past. I'd like to be able to share what I've figured out by trial and error, especially the little things, and get more people immersed in the deeper mechanics, hopefully showing them what they might have otherwise missed.

It would be nice to be more able to help folks figure things out without having to be physically there in-character, peering over their shoulder as borg, rodent or AI, which I can't always do, because I don't know if people need a hand if I don't see them.

As for game experience: I've moved around a lot in terms of what I play most. I've had periods of maining medical, maining security, botany, trash goblin and engineer. I think I've hit a lot of points of the game, though there's always more to pick up.

Aside from the obvious "I picked up medical playing medical and security playing security" - there are plenty of mentors more robust and better medics than I - can usually be found in maints as Ratt- this has let me get familiar with item uses that are a little niche, improvised medical and I know my way around the in rotation maps, which helps immensely with pointing people in the right direction.

Symes is my main silicon character. Other than the mechanics of playing AI or silicon, a bird's eye view of the station gives you an opportunity to help out with setting up the engines, computers- secmate, botany, and anything else, and I hope provides an example that I am able to help explain how to do something rather than just doing it for someone.

Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will): 1x 100 minute(?) ban from Zamusjaa, all servers for saying everypony after being told pony-related greetings were verboten. I have no idea what the date was. A few other warnings, though I don't recall any for several months.

This is sort of a temporary +1 I'm hoping to confirm as time goes on but it should be considered that this is more of a character testimonial at the moment than contemporary evaluation, it'll be fairly brief as I've not been about for a bit and can't directly attest to Corpsey's work in game at this exact moment, but I'm hoping to come back to it later on and say "yeah what I said before? It's still true"

Cropsey would in my opinion genuinely use the mentor mechanics for what they describe in their application: helping people indirectly without also being there in person. I think a habit of the characters they currently play precludes this as an option at times, but in the past and in their prior application I note they would happily drop what their current plans were to help people through learning botany or medbay, which I noticed personally.

In more recent times though not fully contemporary, I've noticed Ratt has, while being a little grobbily man character, also being willing to have a good helping temperament.

A goodish example from a few months back was I was an AI in a round when we were low population and security was having trouble spotting the clues being left by an antag, ratt spotted these, and while still RPing collecting them for their horrible scrap pile, RP'd a situation that brought their attention to security in a way that assisted escalation but didn't also overstep the bounds of what their character role was. It's not what I'd call a mentor-specific example we'd usually speak about, but I do think it helps underline a behaviour cropsey has I've noticed before and think would be useful as a mentor: Ability to step outside their immediate character motivations and do what's best for round escalation in an appropriate way.

I think that's a level-headedness that could be useful for mentoring where you're essentially separate from the game events while helping, and can and will have situations where you're aware of meta information but can't and wouldn't want to act on it.

They do use the questions section a little. It's not everyone's bag but I feel that helps demonstrate their capable of offering information that helps others which is always a good thing.
So I hope to also be able to go "Oh here's some good examples" for admins to consider soon, but I didn't want to keep leaving this either. I think they'd be a good mentor just mostly on prior experience and general temperament.
