Change strange reagent failures
#1
I’m a strange reagent fan and love using it over the cloner. However, I feel like some of the incorrect revives with it feel too punishing and make me feel bad for using it. I’m fine with it gibbing puritans but having no way to see if someone is DNR and having them explode in my face along with all of the stuff on them doesn’t feel great. I’ve also accidentally round removed a few people with due to bugs or me just reading my numbers wrong. I always feel awful about it everytime because of how punishing the gib is. I’d like the failure state for DNR/too high damage to be changed to just a failure to revive like the brain being dead but I’d be open to other ideas that remove the risk of round removal. The time & medicine needed to revive with reagent in my opinion is enough of a risk to justify the reward of avoiding cloner defects and being able to revive in any location. A gib just feels like too much of a punishment because of how little risk is involved with the cloner.

you can check DNR status through the medical records, I believe. also iirc strange reagent is sort of a high-risk-high-reward nonstandard method of resurrection (as opposed to how straightforward but time consuming/mildly inconvenient cloning is) so it doesn't really make sense to take the bite out of it. consequences are necessary for gameplay choices to feel impactful!!

Dunno, gibbing the corpse feels right for skill-issueing the revival of someone via SR.

I feel like a good idea would be to turn the corpse into a horrid abomination that tries to kill people... it would feel thematic for strange reagent.

In general, round removing someone via SR is part of the high risk of it. DNR people getting gibbed has absolutely no consequences, because these cant be revived at all, so thats just a confirmation of that fact. And you pull out SR only in cases cloning is no option, so these people are mostly round removed anyway. Fucking up the SR revival doesnt do too much bad in thse cases.

DNR is litterly players saying: "I do not want to be revived, leave me alone"
So them being gibbed by SR is 2 million percent fine.

We have debated long and hard on reviving / cloning.
And I'll be honest... I want "another way" to revive someone more then changing SR or Cloning.
Something more frankenstein-ish.

Cloning and SR won't work.. but something like: "if you put in certain cyborg organs and then hotwire the brain with a large jolt, they become alive again, but with other horrible consiquences"
Gives robotcists something to do, gives a new harder mode of revival, doesn't work on puritans cause puritans or DNRs.
Also probably this guy needs a battery like a cyborg, but isn't a cyborg. All the weaknesses of the flesh and cyborgs in one body.

I get what you're saying—there's a certain dark thematic edge to turning someone into an abomination after using SR, especially if it's part of that high-risk, high-reward nature of the skill. The idea of gibbing the corpse and having it come back as something monstrous fits well with the creepy vibe that strange reagent (SR) tends to bring, making the consequences of failure more dire and interesting. It's not just a failed revival but a horrifying transformation that adds layers of danger.

Perhaps a different horrid abomination depending on the reason why the SR failed.  A rotten corpse becomes a zombie, or explodes into supersized maggots or something.  Too much BRUTE/BURN?  A tangled morass of scar tissue.  TOX?  I don't know, maybe the poison comes to life and flows out of the corpse as a sort of blob monster.

I like that. It would also give feedback on how you fucked up.

Used to be how it worked from what I heard. People just ended up abusing it?

If an antag wants to vend monkeys and take all round to make a zombie army, more power to them.

for as long as these zombies don't spread the zombie virus, i see no problem with this.

If it's a regular critter zombie it'll just turn kills into more critter zombies.  Whether that makes an unstoppable army depends on if they aggro monkeys - not all critters seem to do so.

Honestly I think it would be funny if it revived players but non-antag zombified them if decomp was too far gone.

They'd still slowly rot over time and might have a limb or two fall off, which you could replace with robot limbs or fresher parts for some Frankenstein creations

I see Strange Regent as more analogous to Herbert West/The Reanimator while what's being described here as more like Resident Evil's various viruses and parasites.

Which isn't a bad idea. You could make a "Stranger Regent" or something that's traitor only and more aggressive like that, or maybe tie it into characters genetics where certain traits make you react to Strange Regent differently and mutate into something worse than a zombie

NT Loyalists start mumbling about profit margins, hairy lizards become bald and cry for hair, all like zombies cry for brains

As much as I love people horrifically shaking then exploding into a confetti of gibs and organs, I do feel we have some wonderful sprites that deserve a chance at being showcased, I would love it if there was a chance that people were to turn into meat cubes for a few extra seconds of life before promptly exploding should the SR fail for any reason.
