Reason for application:

Being able to be a Head of Security has been a personal goal of mine ever since I started getting really invested in the officer role. HoS are meant to be a good example of how the station's security should act and are the guiding hand to the entire team. When things go really wrong, I'd like to think the HoS should be an anchor for other officers to rally around, and all of that sounds like the kind of player I try my absolute best to be at all times. While I've faltered in the past, I've taken a lot of time to think about my relationship to the game and the community since my last application, and have worked hard to refine my faults and improve my general conduct and attitude. As a result, I feel a lot more confident now.




Security experience (300 word minimum):

I've been playing security for... A majority of my time on goonstation, honestly. I believe my first security shift was about a year and a half ago, where I was trained by Paladin Trieu as a security assistant. Since then I've fallen deeply in love with working in sec, as I believe it is one of the best roles for experiencing everything the station has to offer. I've trained a lot of assistants, made a lot of arrests, and made just as many friends. I daresay I've even played a part in saving the station once or twice! I've dealt with pretty much every antagonist type under the sun - even some that aren't naturally selected on RP, and I'd like to think that I've got a really solid understanding of the many tools a standard traitor can get their hands on. What I think I've really enjoyed learning is the nuance of dealing with all these kinds of threats in a way that feels enjoyable to both parties. It's easy to realize that the guy that just stashed a teleport gun in his belt as he walked past you has an uplink, but it takes experience to understand that going for him as soon as you see a glimpse of his contraband isn't going to make the round fun for you, him, or anyone else. This is the kind of thing I find completely foundational to the role, and I'm very happy to have grown to understand it during my time playing. This is also something I am always trying to improve, too! The magic of the game is that there will always be an encounter you've never had before, and you have to learn how to handle it!



What advice would you give to other sec players?


Oh man, TAKE BREAKS, and AHELP SHITTY BEHAVIOR! My past application was denied primarily due to conduct concerns because I would get salty OOC about the goings-on in a round. I'm not proud of it, but it's true. This role is incredibly stressful and too much of it in a large burst can seriously impair your ability to make fair decisions and can definitely make you into a grump if you're not really careful. Take breaks. Don't play security all day! If you feel worn out or have a really frustrating round, remove yourself from the game, or go play botany or something to relax. Hell, nobody is going to blame you for going to cryo if you're really at your wit's end in the middle of a really rough one. If something is really frustrating you or making you feel like this, Ahelp it, too! It helps to at least have a place where you can explain why the round has felt bad, and it can help the admin team to better identify patterns of behaviors in players. I believe in this advice so much that I actually just used it recently! During the middle of last month, I took an extended break for a couple weeks after I found myself getting way too upset over minor things. I left the discord and played other games. It made a world of difference in my ability to enjoy the game and security role. Now that I'm back, I feel a lot better about my ability to handle problems in a reasonable way. It's considerably improved my enjoyment, and prevented a lot of burn-out too!


What game improvements or changes do you think would benefit security players?


During my last application, I suggested a feature that allowed for security officers to respond to crisis alerts with some sort of "ping" that notified the team that they're intending to head over to it. We have that now in the ACK response feature on PDAs, and it's absolutely incredible, and exactly what I wanted. This time, I'm hoping to keep that trend rolling(Hello devs) and suggest that the armory be equipped with a couple standard rechargers for equipment. While there are rechargers in mainsec proper, there tends to be maybe two at maximum on most stations. This is fine for the average shift, but when shit hits the fan and security is using their armory gear, I find that rechargers are a rather large bottleneck - especially since most of the armory gear is cell-powered. You could argue that we could ask engineering to make us more, but during crisis scenarios that is hardly something that time permits.

What's a security gimmick that you've ran or wanted to run?

A while ago, I played a security shift where the entire team were given old-west outfits and given new job titles, all following the cowboy theme. I was a "deputy". The entire team really played into it and talked like cowpokes the entire round. Eventually, even the station got in on it and started calling us using our new job titles. It was a total riot, and was totally worth re-wiring my brain in order to speak like a dork for 90 minutes.

Absolutely, yes. Kate has shown time and time again that she knows her stuff and is able to step up and lead a team. I've seen her lead teams through particularly stressful rounds and show new security players the ropes while keeping it interesting for them. I would love to see Kate as an HoS.
A definite +1 from me!

Yes. I've seen Kate try to RP most, if not all, scenarios to generate more stories and I think it's fantastic. There was a few particularly high-stress rounds, and she never loses her cool. She's also immensely helpful to new sec people! Would love to see her as a HoS. +1

Good enthusiasm, good at keeping the RP up with an antag doing a gimmick or bit, good at handling the workload of security. I would like to point out that Kate can freely take the initiative of leading security even with a HOS there [trust me HOS appreciate it with how much we have going on] and then switch back to following when needed. All of which I feel are solid traits to make a good HOS. You have my support: +1

I was there, when Morrow Moonhollow took their first round as a Security Assistant! Since then, i have often seen her as Officer, and seen her engaging in roleplay with antagonists and leading the team. Also, i've been in many rounds, as stressful as they can be, and Kate never lost her temper, and kept on making good desicions. So, overall, a great Secoff, and i belive soon to be great HoS! +1 from me!

I've been a bit ill the last month so this isn't hugely current, but I didn't want to leave it in the dust either. Please bear in mind it's a good month out of date though from what others have said this still seems true. Just providing context.

I've had a lot of prior rounds with some indirect and direct contact with Curie, even some exceedingly rare times I've actually been working security which almost never happens. Their general mentality in these rounds has been what I'd call very centric around a golden premise of ss13: Be happy to adapt to the round entirely for the funny/narrative context while still doing your job.

A round-specific example of this is a little while back now during a mixed "mild" round. No HoS, and a small security team. No leaders, but Kateaclysm playing curie picked up on a general lack of direction and -lightly- steered the team, while also softening and redirecting a tougher security approach with several monsters aboard in a believable way. Those who came in for interviews or were cooperative got cooperative roleplay black, and there was some delegation that allowed the rest of the team to go hunt down the more murderous one. As an aside it also had the hilarious situation where we offhandedly turned out a fairly innocuous antag (ostensibly for another go) with a bargain about dealing with one of the more lethal problems and they promptly did, which lead to some hilarious panic roleplay. Not a positive or negative, just fun. But the example I feel demonstrates a strong balance and mindfulness about the impact a leadership role in security can have on an entire round.

That balance something I'd argue is really, really hard to teach. You can learn how to play the game superbly, you can be a fantastic character in your lane, but being able to have the will to keep the general flow of a round and the entertainment of other players in mind even when you are responsible for also playing a character. If that's the way they're doing things with other people and its consistent then I think the game itself would derive some benefit from them as HoS. +1

Seen Morrow around a fair bit, cant say I've interacted with them a lot. When I do, I know security's in good hands with her on the team. Does a great job balancing the scales of dealing with antags. +1 from me, they're a great person who knows what they're doing.

I've played so many rounds with Kate and I will say she is a very consistent sec player, has the experience and temperament to HoS. She is very RP friendly and demonstrates in every round how security should behave. She also is more than eager to teach newbies as well which is excellent for a HoS and also kinda needed given how many people I see playing sec that could use the helping hand. +1 for me.

yes yes yes yes absolutely

They have consistently played amazing security for ages now!  Super responsive on comms, always calls alerts, where they are going, what they are doing, and keeps the team together on radio.  I haven't played with them much recently, but just the last round I played with them demonstrates this well, always on comms and keeping stuff together the best they can.  They have a ton of experience and know right from wrong, I've seen them teaching new security players far more times than i can count, even devoting entire 1.5 hour rounds to it start to finish.  Their leadership skills are 100% up to par and add a ton of cohesion to the team.  

Whenever I think of consistent, fun, quality security this is the first name that comes to mind.  The reason for application is spot on for what they actively practice in game.  I think they'd make a great HoS!

Roughly 3 months ago there was a round I had with Curie Mint that left a very strong impression on me. I’ve barely played any security but decided to late-join as a random name security assistant. Curie joined after me, and instantly noticed that I was struggling to adjust to the role. There was already a lot going on, but Curie offered me a helping hand and walked me through the basics. The whole time Curie was patient, thorough, and enthusiastic. When Curie was called away by the HOS for an emergency, she checked in on me over the radio to offer encouragement and answer any questions I had. Unfortunately, I died.  After losing her trainee and the HOS, Curie quickly switched gears to organize and guide security until the HOS was cloned. With a round where so much is going on at once and you’re helping a new player it’s natural to be frustrated, but the whole time Kateaclysm rolled with the punches and kept calm.
 
I bring up that round specifically because it demonstrated to me some admirable traits that I think are important in a HOS: An eagerness to help others, the patience to keep your cool, and being ready to step up and act as a leader when necessary. I had started the round nervous and lost but by the end I had learned the ropes and had a great time doing it. For me, Curie turned what would’ve otherwise been an overwhelming experience into a very lovely and memorable round. If another newbie had been in my shoes, I truly believe they would’ve felt just as welcomed and reassured as I did thanks to Kateaclysm.
 
That was one round though and there’s still plenty of room for improvement. I think the advice Kate offers in this application is incredibly important and something I hope Kate continues to take to heart. With a role like Security frustration is inevitable, as simple as the advice “take a break” may seem its oftentimes difficult to recognize when you need to take that step back in the heat of the moment.
 
To this day I still see Morrow/Curie reaching out to new sec and offering that same excitement and patience, so I really hope that every person trained by Morrow or Curie gets to feel as welcomed as I did and that she continues to be a reassuring presence for others.

I have good experiences with Morrow, both good at command and enjoying the game properly in a way I think is great for the HoS job. Just the other day I was playing HoS for Friday and the bridge was heavily irradiated, Morrow as captain agreed to my plan to blow up the entire bridge to solve the problem and what do you know? It worked! Later that round I completely exploded and they picked up the slack well even after the sudden loss of 3 members of the security department with no explanation. Showed that they're good for a fun time and good under stressful times too. +1 from me.

good interactions, impressed that you sort of strike me as doing two very different styles with morrow and curie (it's a good thing!) where i think my experience of curie has been a little tougher and morrow is more laid back. i've seen you swing towards decent leniency as captain to let antags do their thing even when you The Player could look at some things and intuit really readily about specific crimes/victims/traitor types/tools, and instead you let people play out their dealings without getting overly mechanical and meta about stuff, so that's really nice to see

twofold comment though:
1. hos is tricky, hard, and in the worst moments, it is frustrating. it's fine to acknowledge in your app that sometimes you just need to take a break, but there are going to be very very very minor sorts of goofs common to this game that get your goat for one reason or another, or you won't think they were fair or whatever. i've had my fair share of stuff that i really beat myself up over because it was minor or obvious or whatever. when you start to find more personal issue with the other PLAYERS for that kind of stuff, you need to take a step backl. when you start using OOC to talk on how it wasn't properly escalated, you REALLY need to take a step back.

hos Does Things during a round but whether something was/wasn't appropriately escalated isn't your call, you defer it to ahelp and learn to roll with the punches even when they're super crappy; you have to be responsive. you don't need to bring it up in OOC and don't need to do that after another person has already given a gentle reminder (to all) that comments about that stuff belong in ahelp and not OOC. because of the degree of "round flow control" and escalation expectations a hos has, when someone who is in that role shames someone for not escalating "correctly", it's super sucky and hostile. and in a lot of cases, the people who Did The Thing That Made You Mad thought to themselves that they were doing really good escalation and trying really hard with announcements and ominousness and foreboding and (pre-warned) escalating bombing antics and whatnot. leave it in Apms and move on. i'm not asking you to never be upset by things, just don't use OOC to mention it.

boooop, i realize i forgot something for clarity sorry for double-post, but i made it sound like "dont do this if you play sec". dont do it at all, since people see WL holders and the idea is it raises the esteem of them in their eyes as "oh this is a person who knows what's fair and cool and tries to make the game environment better for others". but regardless of whether you spectated, played hos, or played hall monitor, people look at what you say with more regard because you're vetted and so it can weigh heavy on Antag McGee who thought they did their best but learned people didn't like it. "this is a person trusted to know what good escalation is because they have to do it, right? so when they say that i did bad escalation.............wow, i guess i was really bad."

I feel you've grown significantly and are good for round flow and clarity. I feel you do your best to approach situations fairly with the right amount of leniency.
