[MERGED PR] Remove the hygiene motive from RP
#1
Thumbs Up
PULL REQUEST DETAILS

[RP] [REMOVAL]
About the PR

Comments out the hygiene motive in `make_motives`.

Why's this needed?

There's been multiple forum threads re-litigating everyone's reasons but the gist is unlike hunger and thirst that encourage you to have RP encounters (chef/bar/etc.) having to go take a shower alone every 20 minutes doesn't.

This has been a long time coming in my opinion. Kill it! Kill Hygiene!
#3
I'm not gonna rehash the million arguments that have been made in favour of this, but I'm such a huge fan of this PR. KILL IT!!!!!
#4
I, too, wish to see hygiene utterly obliterated.
#5
I've said my piece on this a hundred times before, so commenting now just to show support. I would really like this to be merged.
#6
Can we remove the other motives too

If anyone wants to see the previous conversations on it

If we want to still have a way for stinklines to exist if you want them for some reason maybe apocrine enhancement (the gene that makes you sweat) could do that. Right now idk what it actually does if anything.
#9
Agree that the hygiene motive should die and be forgotten.
#10
Can we still call the geneticists smelly and to take a shower?
#11
Honestly I enjoy eating, drinking and showering. But I think they need to be much more simplified, perhaps you only NEED to drink one cup or eat one thing to satisfy yourself, as opposed to 3 minutes of drinking 5 gallons of water and twelve burgers. The shower could be saved by just washing your hands once or hopping in the shower with clothes on.

I feel like people would be way more willing to rp if it becomes less tedious.

Fart bomb/grenades!

By result, it's the best working motive we have. Removing it is a mistake but hey, at that point at least people can completely ignore motives.

The other motives need to be visible to others or MUCH more crippling. Maybe then we can remove hygiene.

Playing unpopular dissension and I can't believe I'm doing it for stinky but here we are. The prior arguements for an against have been helpfully posted here. I think ultimately this is actually more a debate against "I think some of you need a basic motive to disengage however briefly from silently doing your role job on RP/Stop metaclicqueing/Get occasionally blasted by shower pills as a bonus" and "Actually I RP just fine but stinky is annoying, disrupts my RP/job and I'll just drop a pile of water at my feet and flop in that" and the problem is I think both are very valid but maybe I'm a pessimist and bank on the status quo.

I do not like this, but I can't pretend it's not something that's constantly argued about with some merit, so I'm forced to say a testmerge is probably the best route.

I'm entirely neutral on this issue but still feel like I should point out that hygiene is a notable driver of foot traffic and potential crime enabler. A lot of people in previous threads seem to have lightly touched on this but I feel like it's understated. Some argued that its negligible due to how quick showering is and how you can avoid it but I disagree personally and we could always change that. Sinks were nerfed to boost that even more, so people are now encouraged to go out and seek out showers. And IMO pouring water cooler water onto the floor and flopping on it should not do shit for hygiene but that may be a controversial take.

It gets people out of their departments, gives antags some breathing room if their target is in the department and of course opens up the stinkee to get mugged or murdered in a much less public area. It may not seem too impactful but I think of it much like the radiation storm event. It may halt RP and create some awkward standing around but it creates traffic out of departments and allows antags to do their thing possibly. Some of my favorite antag moments involved catching someone in the showers and bolting the doors on them, something I don't think would ever happen without the hygiene motive. The crew quarters are already a dead zone of traffic even on RP, this would make them even less visited.

Still think we should just remove passive decay entirely over a complete removal.
