how about a cross between VR pods and those jack-in beds from The™Matrix™

you climb in and connect and bammo: you're piloting a borg / are the AI overmind.
While Jacked-In™ your fleshy body is protected by a robust pod only you can open, but taking damage as a borg hurts you for real. If you die in Canada, you die in real life. Also you're bound by the silicon laws, and being killswitched likewise kills your switch too.

Basically have one or two of those in the upload so you can designate an nu robotte & also not have to abandon all chances of being human.
