Move Genetics over to Research
#16
its fine the way it is

itd be nice if there were some kind of corpse-detector chute outside of genetics that would just dump in dead bodies though to address the concern of piling up bodies

since the only people who bother with the morgue is the roboticist, really

i can't help but see this as a good thing. we need more borgs Megaman

All very valid points, but I don't seem to see anything that directly replies to one of the things I brought up: If genetics research is...well, research, and has little to nothing to do with the medical treatment of other people except for MAYBE the resistances, and even that's a stretch, then what the hell is it doing in medbay? Why is a mechanic designed for the acquisition of superpowers shoehorned into medbay, and why not just keep the cloners where they are and move the genetics consoles/scanners to a separate room? It doesn't even have to be in research proper, really, just separate enough that they can be left to do their own thing without interference from aforementioned shitlords.

My reply was pretty direct. I suggested...
Giving cloner access to doctors
Giving geneticists access to the main corridor of research and removing their medbay access.
moving genetics next to research. (swapping positions with pathology)
moving the morgue closer to the entrance to medbay
moving chemistry up a bit to make way for a corridor to genetics.

Ah, right, my bad. My school wi-fi blocks imgur, so I couldn't see the map you posted. I definitely like that idea, though I'm marginally iffy about pathology switching places with the genetics lab, if only because of the combination of potential viral outbreaks with proximity to the rest of medbay.

Oh, not directly swapping places. pathology would still be it's own little separated thing, only moved east. it'd actually make it further away from the main medbay happenings. the cloner and morgue get closer to the entrance. chemistry is still connected to medbay, whilst moving north to allow genetics to become attached to research. the only thing I'm not sure about is what would be where genetics and the morgue used to be? perhaps robotics and the morgue could be moved further east...

A; Simple thing would be... Geneticist do their fucking jobs! Most likely, your chair is spinning FOR A REASON. You could spend two seconds to check doors/mouge for a dead body and head back to standing in front of your computer screen.

B: Just gives medical docs access to genetics anyway. with the way its currently set up and not give a FUCK about the lazy bastards that don't do their job.

C: Add a little door area near the geneticists southern door that is body dropoff. It has 2 doors, one interior and one exterior that the person inside genetics can just cycle the doors open and close using a button

Well, as has clearly been shown, Geneticists do not do their jobs of cloning people, and any amount of yelling about it has overall very minimal effects on the frequency at which they bother to do so.

And there's another problem: When geneticists sit at a computer and hammer out genes, they ARE doing their jobs. It's just that, as things stand, their jobs consist of two very different and practically mutually exclusive things, and if the average spaceman were to choose between foraging for corpses and being able to shoot lasers out of their eyes, most people are going to go with trying to shoot lasers out of their eyes, with the corpses as an occasional afterthought.

As has been mentioned before, geneticists are VERY touchy about their work, and having a lab to themselves is vastly preferrable here. Moving the cloners out of genetics instead of letting more people into genetics is the optimal solution, here.

people who get defensive about their workplaces are dorks, unless you're in toxins where 99% of unexpected visitors are changlings.

if you replace geneticists by erasing them completely and giving doctors access, then there'll be no one to be touchy; it'd be like pathology, a matter of who got there first

Well if all of medical gets homogenized like science, I don't see much changing other than robotics being always empty and everyone fighting over superpowers.

Okay, since I've been using a lot of wordage, I'm going to condense my suggestions to a short, simple list:

1. Give regular medical staff access to the cloners, or maybe even make them public access.
2. Move the genetics consoles and monkey pen to their own laboratory, preferrably one distanced from the hustle and bustle of medbay.
3. Give geneticists some level of research access, either in replacement of or in addition to their medical access.

I think that's a little complicated of a solution for a simple problem, but I'll agree that I think it'd be somewhat better than what we have now

Simple fix for Genetics: fix the skeletonization and rotting graphics so that the whiny ghosts who never bother to alt-click their bodies can see why they're not being cloned. Because I just don't see this being a real problem. I can't think of a single time where I've seen a geneticist who was getting cloneable corpses, knew he was getting cloneable corpses, and still never did anything about it. I've seen geneticists with piles of corpses they weren't cloning, sure, but every time I intervene to do something about it I discover that all the corpses are either rotted, husks, or braindead. Or the geneticist is a traitor/mindslave and shoves me in the cloner when I'm not looking.

just today I brought two bodies, fresh. to genetics.
they sat there for like five minutes, so I broke in and stole both the porta genes

they still refused to clone the bodies: one moved to the big computer. the other went to go look for me and the portagenes.

the bodies rotted.

and from what others tell me, this isn't an uncommon problem
