That'd be pretty solid yeah. Just a simple weapon, nothing fancy. Has a chance to splat tomatoes inside of it. If they're normal, nothing happens, but if they're explosive, it hurts the wielder (not a whole lot, maybe 30 or 40 brute damage), provided the random chance to splat tomatoes triggers.
But yeah, this is a pretty good suggestion. Sounds pretty simple to make as well. Need an array containing the contents of an attached bag, then wherever you click while holding the gun will send the first item on that list flying out with some velocity in the direction you clicked.

Carrots/corn should get spike people like darts and cause bleeding damage
steel wheat causes shrapnel
firey chili lights you on fire, icy one freezes you ofc
any reagent containing one imparts the reagent to who it hits? <--this idea could be terrible and/or fun
shooting a log knocks someone over as if a vending machine hit them, but knocks you over too
cherry causes a small explosion (cherry bomb)
Coconut has a chance to knock someone out briefly

On hit, run some weighted chance based on the size of the produce-
Either it hits the target and does the damage described earlier in the thread- OR -
it instantly forcefeeds the produce to the target

we've found a winner folks
way simpler than every item having custom unique code but still hilarious with room for tons of interesting interactions

Yeah this seems like a pretty good, simple, and reasonable mechanic. Naturally there might be exceptions but they'll pop up once they become issues in-game!
I would imagine that it'd force-feed on hit, so wasting your produce is still an option if it misses the target.
Would it be like, single-shot or burst-fire or automatic? And, how long should the delay be, roughly?

I originally posted the forcefeeding thing only semi-seriously, but the more I think about it the more it's actually very botanous. It's the implementation that actually encourages *good* botanning. The more potent the chems in your produce, the more effective they are. Load a bag with bananas and watermelons. Slow people down with shittons of mint. make em catch fire with hell chilies. It's like a whitelist chemist machinegun.

I meant that in the sense that the scope of chems you can forcibly load 10,000 units into a spaceman in about 6 seconds is limited to a list of chems available via produce.
Most of them will suck to have 10,000 units of inside you.
e: I've probably missed a fairly blatantly obvious sarcasm marker though

It should only have about a 30% chance to actually force feed the person. Otherwise it just wacks them at slightly higher than throwing damage.
That way, you're rapid firing mass quantities of veggies in the hope that your lethal sugar peanuts connect

one note, the matsci only items don't fit in a produce satchel, so there goes the logs idea poland spring had about that; and chef stuff fits in a produce satchel, chef needs this too.

I can see 2 main ways to balance this iteration of the weapon.
1. Slow fire-rate, requiring you to either load the veggies in individually or being fairly slow to get to the next shot. This instantly forcefeeds whatever abomination you have made to the target
2. Bolt(anic) Gun, fires per click and takes produce bags as magazines (Bonus points if it actually looks like a Home Depot bolt gun) but only has a certain percentage of a chance to force feed.
Or maybe both as separate fire-modes, one being an emag reward or having them as seperate buy options

what would happen with the items that can't be eaten at all?
you know, stuff like herbs or things that are too big to be eaten, and chef has a ton of food that just says you can't cram this in your mouth, and most food items take multiple bites.
not to mention the fact that you can put brainburgers in produce satchels.
