An Energy Based Economy
#1
The one thing that everyone needs during any round, or would at least greatly enjoy, is a functioning engine. This forms the foundation of an economic system that can tie all departments together.

Already the lights and equipment run of the grid. Give Engineering a method to tax energy heavy departments like research and medical.

Make more equipment run on internal batteries, such as flashlights or PDAs. Once they run out, the batteries would have to be charged or replaced. Batteries could be purchased from vending machines, or manufactured by ores from mining. Or they could be stuck into public or paid chargers for a fast recharge

Different battery classes and sizes can be used to differentiate between different equipment, so you couldn't swap out a PDA or headset battery and stick it into a Taser gunĀ

Everyone would have a vested interest in a running engine, miners would have round long meaningful work getting materials for batteries to make and sell, matssci becomes important in producing good batteries, the crew has universal item to spend money on, and a resource to squabble over
