The only thing I see about it almost instantly killing you is that the engine is constantly turned on, and the air is constantly being supplied with lethal plasma. Once you open it and get in, you breath in and due to the how much plasma there is you are generally forced to inhale more than normal, and you take lots of plasma damage.
