You *might* be able to work around it by ctrl-alt-shifting yourself. I know you can still examine people and things with rightclick while blind and unconscious.

Edit: Ya know, something like that might be neat to have as a sort of way to "see with your hands," with the tradeoff being that you end up groping the heck out of whatever you're trying to see.
