Problem is that I can't think of any specific reason why it'd go terribly wrong.
This idea requires players and dungeon masters to cooperate
Some dungeon masters would attempt to railroad the story and make things generally unfun
Thinking up stories is difficult
Some dungeon masters would just throw a bunch of antags into the mix and call it a day without really thinking up much in the way of a story
