Studying the computer systems is a-ok. Accidentally locking up the server is also fine. It just means you need to send a bug report (under exploits) and not do it again. Sharing said exploits is bad, though, which is why I can't go too deep into explanations until they're patched up.

The lack of progress is a combination of many things. To the broad majority the whole #sol thing comes off as an incestuous bunch of nerds running a 'serious business' cloak-and-dagger type game. It's not like that, but the loudest of that group have given it a bad name. Telsci and research just has a bad name from all the nerds holding the shuttle hostage because they had 4 keys at 80 minutes.
