maybe thermals could see wraiths too, but as a blue/black abscence of heat rather than a source of it, since hauntings traditionally produce cold spots

I actually really like this idea, both thematically and balance-wise. Tying 'seeing the wraith' to a rare item seems better than just putting salt literally everywhere and hoping for the best, it makes some level of greater strategy possible. It also gives wraiths a greater target than just whoever is in the area.
