I fixed the problems on my attack_twitch branch that were detailed in this thread.
Sleepy pens and the silenced .22 won't trigger the attack animation anymore, and neither will using items on yourself.
People seemed to like it for eating/drinking stuff though, so I added a little eat animation that squishes your character slightly when they take a bite/sip.
