Been running into this more than a few times now. Got told last time it was something to do with cooldowns.

Absorb has no cooldown.

Not being able to absorb anybody is a real hoot. Entering regenerative status as a monkey completely FUBARs your transform as well.

Trying to transform into my original form from the pseudomonkey regenstatus leaves you with.
