On the note of a voodoo wizard.
Why not just give wizard a magic cauldron he can spawn for magic points (doing this gives him less to spend on spells)
Pour reagents inside, wave the staff on it and BAM, stuff happens. Stuff that depends on the reagents added to the mixture.
Obviously the weirder the ingredients the wizard can find, the cooler the effect, but some effects should be really lame, like a poof or some smoke, or maybe a bee pops out.
The important thing is that only the wizard (or maybe someone dressed up like a wizard) can use it, and if the crew wants stuff from the cauldron, they have to ask the wizard to make it for them.
A cool wizard could create nice things, a mean wizard would probably spawn really awful things if they can hide the cauldron and get the magic ingredients.
