Are you sure you weren't dead? If you die in a deaf body, you won't hear ghosts and you won't hear yourself talking to them.

During the time when this bug was prominent, you could be dead and still alive, as well as unconscious and still awake. All being unconscious did was deafen you and render you unable to pick things up.
